BACKGROUND CHECKS
FOR ALL GUN SALES
RAISE THE MINIMUM
AGE TO PURCHASE
Secure storage laws prevent children from accessing guns by requiring gun owners to lock up their firearms. The consequences of the laws vary – with the strictest policies having consequences for any gun owner who fails to secure their gun. Studies show that when households properly lock their firearms, there is an 85% reduced risk of unintentional injuries.
The Assault Weapon Prohibited bill prohibits assault-style weapons designed for the military from being sold to the public. Assault weapons were responsible for 90% of the deadliest mass shootings from 2009-2022. When there was such a ban in effect from 1994-2004, it was credited for stopping 11 mass shootings. At this point, this law is only active in 9 states.
A High-Capacity Magazine Ban restricts their purchase, as they enhance a gun's lethality by allowing more rounds before reloading. The deadliest mass shootings from 2009-2022 involved guns equipped with such magazines. States with stricter magazine size laws see over 50% fewer mass shootings compared to those without bans.
This law requires you receive a background check from all gun sales or before you obtain a firearm permit. A background check looks into high-risk factors that would disqualify someone from purchasing a gun. We must work to close legal loopholes for good, as some states allow people to avoid background checks by purchasing guns from private sellers or at gun shows.
This bill aims to raise the minimum age for purchasing any firearm to 21+. Currently, the age limit for purchasing long guns and assault weapons is 18+, with no minimum age requirement for unlicensed sellers. Young adults aged 18-20 are most susceptible to gun violence – it’s the leading cause of death in this cohort. That’s why raising the minimum age to 21 makes sense for the youth.
