Won't pressurize Harmanpreet Kaur for marriage: Parents (original) (raw)
Harmanpreet’s parents watch their daughter bat on Friday.
CHANDIGARH: When Moga's Harmanpreet Kaur was mauling the Australian attack in Derby, her parents were patiently moving the beads on their rosary.
Her 52-year-old father,
Harmandar Singh
, and mother Satwinder Kaur are baptised Sikhs. Though Harmanpreet, known by her family moniker Harry, couldn't follow her parents traditions due to her career, which requires her to wear sports outfits, trim her hair, the ace batsman has been dutifully making a 20-minute video call to her parents from the United Kingdom before every match in the ongoing Women's World Cup to listen to the hym of the day at the local gurudwara.
“From Whatsapp to Facetime, we are used to reciting prayers and hyms to Harman on phone.
We are glad that we have raised our kid who has kept her Sikh values intact,“ says Harmandar, who works as a clerk attached with an advocate at Moga district court, The doting parents however say they aren't conventional like other Punjab families in restricting the cricketer's social life. The duo says they have never asked their daughter to suggest a suitable time and age to marry.
“Cricket first. Right from the childhood, we wanted to her be a batsman. We can't deny her right to build her career and ability to win laurels for India as a female star,“ stated Harmandar.
The family though has a littany of complaints against politicians.
“Not a single political party or their representative has ever visited our home in last since 2009 when Harmanpreet began to win plaudits for her impressive sports display. The least last Akali Dal government or Congress government could have done is gave Harmanpreet a job if not a place to live,“ he said.
The swashbuckling cricketer's younger sister Hemjeet, apost-graduate in English and assistant professor at
Guru Nanak College
in Moga, is feeding the family with a meagre Rs 15,000 from her salary.
“Though my sister is fortunate that she has a bat sponsor BAS from
Jalandhar
and shoes sponsor Nike but the point is they are there as long as career goes. What after that?“ questioned Hemjeet.
