Many incidents in Thira are based on real life (original) (raw)
Vineeth Sreenivasan’s latest outing, Thira, starring Shobhana and Dhyan Sreenivasan, has been lauded for its subject and treatment. But as always, the young director is in no mood to bask in the glory and is more interested in talking about the sequel —Thira-2. He clears the rumours regarding the film and more. Excerpts:
Are you happy with the responses to Thira?
Yes, I have been getting good reviews.
But more than that, if people liked it and are going to theatres to watch it, I’m happy. I don’t need anything more.
What made you pick on such a theme as trafficking of girls?
We wanted to do something real. Many of the incidents in the film are real-life incidents. The one where Dhyan’s character gets angry with the policeman at the station for demanding details of the molestation in public, and even the one where his sister gets kidnapped. We did as much research as possible on trafficking with the little resources we had. Scriptwriter Rakesh referred to biographical notes to pick up incidents. We also sought help from journalists who furnished us with information. One of the criticisms against the movie has been that the camera is shaky all through. That was done consciously, in accordance with the nature of the film. We wanted to keep it fast paced; and make every scene feel gritty.
People say you have matured as a director…
Have I? (laughs) I have never thought about it that way. My only concern was that each of my films should be done in a different way. Malarvady Arts Club was a small town story, Thattathin Marayathu, a love story and Thira, a thriller.
There are rumours that Thira-2 will have Dulquer Salmaan…
That’s news to me. Thira was planned as a trilogy and we already had the story idea for all the three parts. But the scripting for the second and third parts has not begun yet. Casting will be made only after the scripting. That said, the sequel will be more character oriented, not an extension of Thira. Shobhana will be there, of course. There is no Thira series without her. But Dhyan’s part is over with Thira. We haven’t decided who will play the lead. The story of the sequel takes off from Amar. As you might have noticed, there is no completion with regard to the people with negative shades in Thira. There is only a kind of temporary relief.
What’s next for Dhyan?
He has been getting offers but hasn’t taken up anything yet. But you have to ask him directly, he makes his own decisions.
