The weather is being kind to football this
winter and so far has been kind to the
company with which the clubs have taken
out rain insurance policies. The conditions
were all favourable on Saturday, and al-
though there were no surprises, the form
of the losing team in each match was such
as to justify the hope that the weaker
sides are improving. Particularly is this
improvement noticeable at North Mel-
bourne and at Fitzroy. As the teams settle
down the prospects of many interesting
contests before the semi-finals are reached
become more hopetul. Each week it is be-
coming more difficult to select the match

Lewis, of North Melbourne, was probably the
best man on the ground. Ile dominited tiie'rock,

Baker roved well. Gaudion was effective both on

the others were Gregory and Pearce.
Melbourne had a line p'aycr in Sellars (wing)

PRAHRAN TOO FAST FOR BRIGHTON
Little difficulty as experienced by Prahran in
defeating Brighton by a substantial margin at
Elsternwick Park on Saturday Prahran gave a
promising display on the wings, where it was
partlcularly fast and its players were generally
in front of Brighton in the ruck. Brighton was
weak across the centre, with the result that
man) promising attacks did not reach the for
ward line The team seemed to be playing with-
out confidence in the second half Koop the
Prahran full back, was instrumental in stopping
many of Brighton's attacks A feature of Prahran's
game was the success it achieved by short passes
and accurate punching out of the ball
Although the scores were level at the end of the
first quarter Prahran had given the best display
It marked particularly well on the forward line
and had its kicking been accurate it would have
had a more substantial score Prahran players
disposed of the ball quickly, while Brighton
adopted rush tactics and lost many opportunities
through its men not waiting to take their free
kicks The two goals Brighton scored were due
to fine individual efforts by Johnson. Brighton
attacked first in the second quarter and was
unlucky to score only two points Winning con-
tinuously in the centre line, Prahran took control
Brighton struggled hard in the third term but
was up against a team whose high markers were
able to frustrate almost every attack. Prahran
attacked continually, but kicked poorly The
players had little excuse to offer for their eight
behinds because the slight wind was not trouble-
some Play was often dull towards the end of
the match Had it not been for Johnson who
klcked three goals in the last quarter Brighton
would have gone down more heavily. Final scores
Prahran, 12 gls 24 bhds (96 pts)
Brighton 8 gls 16 bhds (64 pts)
Goal kickers -Prahran-Jordan (3) Williams
(2), Hawkins (2), Wells (2), Mahoney, Salter Trim
Brighton-Johnson (5), Clotz. Poulter, Hill
Koop did best service for the Prahran side He
marked perfectly in goal and kicked out a great
distance Bruce (halfback) showed a thorough
knowledge of the game, while Jordan (roving)
took full advantage of the knock outs from the
scrum Hawkins (forward) showed considerable
promise He had many opportunities, and would
have had a higher tally of goals to his credit
if his kicking had been more accurate. Williams
and Mahony also did good work
Hill, Poulter and Cantwell were probably the
best of the Brighton players Hill was con-
spicuous for his fine work forward and in the
ruck at all stages of the game Poulter (following)
was always reliable, while Cantwell and Joynson
were most effective back men. Johnson and Hunt
