Hawker College will celebrate two
years of record participation in school
sports and record successes with a
school sports dinner tomorrow night
Dr Bill Donovan, the principal of the
college, himself involved in coaching,
said that more than 1 SO students had
played in college teams that won com
petitions in 1987, represented the ACT,
or represented Australia.
Awards will be made at the dinner to
the male and female sports stars of the
year, who will have been nominated by
their peers and chosen for their perfor
mances over the past two years. The
guest speaker at the dinner will be
Olympic hurdler Don Wright.
There will also be awards for the two
year-11 students considered most
promising for 1988, and for the year's
Likely finalists for the girls' individ
Lisa Powell, who represented the col- J
lege at badminton, softball, touch
and hockey. She represented the
ACT in U18 and U21 hockey teams
and was selected in the Australian
U18 hockey side. Powell is an Esan
da scholarship holder for hockey and (
Jaqui Bishop is another outstanding
hockey player, representing the ACT
at U18 and U21 level and Australia
Bronwyn Calver has represented the
college and the ACT in cricket, bas
ketball, badminton, soccer, athletics,
indoor cricket and hockey. She
toured the US in 1987 with the Aus
tralian youth women's soccer team.
Contenders for the boys' award in
Justin Harsdorf, who represented the
college in tennis, volleyball and Aus
tralian football. He has won numer
ous tennis tournaments, represented
the ACT and was selected in the
Australian schoolboys' tennis teams.
Geoff Logkn captained the Australian
rugby union schoolboys' team in
1987 after also representing Austra
lia in 1986. He played in college rug
by league, union and touch teams,
(ason Gregory represented the college
in rugby league, union, touch and
Australian football. He played for
the ACT in three of these sports and
was selected in Australian teams in
rugby league and touch football.
Bradley Clyde is a potential Raiders
player. He was selected in the Aus
tralian rugby league schoolboys'
team in 1986 and 1987 and while
touring in Britain in 1986 Clyde was
voted the best-and-fairest player. He
has also represented the college in a
Other Australian representatives
from the college arc Anthony Hayes,
Lisa Camden, Roni Volavola, Paul
Chalmers and Lee Wilkinson.
Hawker College's boys' indoor soc
cer team was runner-up in the champi
on schools of Australia competition,
the rugby league team got to the quar
ter-finals of the Commonwealth Bank '
competition and the golf team was sec
ond in the national championships.
