It is a sign of the times, which means
that our town is forging ahead, to note the
improvements Mr. Cavanagh is making in
the premises in and adjoining the Victoria
Hotel. A billiard room at the back is now
near completion, and will be furnished with
one of Alcock's best tables, and will he
worked in connection with the hairdressing
saloon now occupied by Mr. Webb. A
second shop next to Mr. Webb's is being
altered and enlarged for Mr. Ivimey,
jeweller, of your town, who intends opening
here on the 18th inst. I am sure we wish ;
him every success in his venture, and hope he ;
will not regret the step he is taking. Yet :
another business is to open with us, and that j
is Mr. Solomon who has opened in the old
store,- that was once occupied by Messrs.
Throssell, Son and Stewart. Mr. Solomon
has a good stock of harness ware, also
saddles, kc. He is also agent for the John
Hunter Co. Limited, a name which speaks
for itself, and can fit anyone in hoot ware,
from the infant to the adult. Some are
leaving us aud others come to take their
At a committee meeting of the Raee Club
held last Saturday it was decided that
general' entries and acceptances should close
at 4.30 p.m. on the 14th October instead of
9 p.m., and that the right to the booth,
«rate. tote. etc.. should be sold at Davev's
Hotel at 5 p.m., instead of at Mr. Buttle 's
sale. This information, together with all
that may be required will appear in the
programmes and also in your advertising
columns on the 23rd inst.
It appears from the -number Gf entries
received that the ploughing match at Cnl- \
ham on the 20th inst. will 'Ke! a success.
Every effort is being made by the committee
to provide for the amusement of those who
will visit Culharn on this occasion, as besides
the'-ploughing there will be sports ; also a
conceit and dance later in the evening at
the Agricultural Hall. The creature com
forts of those present will bo well cared for —
a luncheon or dinner for the moderate sum
of 2s. 6d. for gentlemen and Is. fid. for
ladies, and a smaller sum still for children.
A tea will also be laid at a reasonable price,
and of course refreshments will be provided
The trees given by Mr. Q.uin'lan to our
town are mow being planted ;>n the main
street, and around each a proper tree.-guard
iis being placed. This is a s(ep'in-the right
direction, and no doubt if -the trees are
watered -now and then during #1 first
summer they will do well. '
