A careful reading of the oldest material (Coptic, Greek and Arabic) of his life in comparison with the data about conscription in late antiquity leads to two results: 1. Pachomios, as described in his life, did not even become a recruit. 2. The description of the entlistment is very contradictional. Since the historical core seems to be the inprisonment in Thebes, because there he was confronted with Christian charity which impressed him so much, that he decided to become a Christian, it is more likely that Pachomios was put in jail due to a crime he committed and was brought to Antinooupolis to the sole court of the Thebais. Finally there is indeed a possibility to link his release from jail with Constantine the Great, which would date his release to 313 AD.
In the paper a detailed English summary is included.

This can be confirmed primarily by the old Sahidic fragments of the life of Pachomios and secondly by events which are missing in the Coptic tradition but extant in the Greek vita prima, which is an abridged translation from the Coptic. It is obvious in both cases, that details were changed in later redactions of the life (Bohairic and Greek), but in the Arabic Göttingen version the events preserved their original character which makes more sence.
