About Mind of Winter

In January of every year, the Writers House Planning Committee embraces the post-holiday doldrums with a celebration of winter's comforts, inspired by Wallace Stevens's chilly poem, "The Snow Man." We gather here at the Writers House, stoke a big fire in the parlor, simmer several big pots of soups and stews, and share our favorite winter-themed readings with one another. Let it snow!

Notes from the Green Couch

The January 2007 Mind Of Winter program is featured in Eric Karlan's Notes from the Green Couch, a series of summaries and analyses of Writers House events.

WHO COOKS?

Mind of Winter encourages and challenges our community to take full advantage of the Kane-Wallace kitchen. The goal: make soup for 75 people. In 2007, Alexis Nguyen (W'06) worked up an elaborate menu, including potato leek soup, classic beef stew, chili with corn bread, French onion soup with cheese and roasted garlic toasts, rosemary biscuits, mulled cider, sticky toffee pudding and hot drinking chocolate.

TRISHA & GRACE

It would be difficult to pull off Mind of Winter meals without volunteers. Grace Ambrose (C'11) and Trisha Low (C'11) (pictured below) have probably peeled more potatoes and chopped more onions than anyone.

LINDSEY TODD

In 2010, Lindsey Todd (C'12) took charge of the Mind of Winter menu. Vegan matzo ball soup? Lindsey will make you a believer. Below from left to right (starting with the man in a hat): David Cherry (Mastery Charter School intern), Erin Gautsche (Program Coordinator of Writers House), Lindsey Todd (C'12), and Kathryn Lipman (C'10).
