Background
In existence since Federation, Maranoa has been held by the Country/National Party since 1943. Maranoa takes its name from a local river.
The electorate includes Barnaby Joyce's former base in St George, but Joyce was not prepared to challenge for party selection in 2013 when current MP Bruce Scott announced he would be re-contesting. Joyce eventually crossed south of the border and won the neighbouring NSW seat of New England at the 2013 election.
