HISTORY K-DIV-315-HI V.1 VOL I OF III 11479 P0711 557851 37 2448549 10-19-1991 AIRLIFT CAPABILITY OF 315 AIR DIVISION (COMBAT CARGO) AT TACHIKAWA AIR BASE (AB), JAPAN DURING PERIOD FROM JAN THROUGH JUN 56 WAS CHIEFLY BY UNITED STATES AIR FORCE (USAF), BUT WAS ALSO USED BY UNITED STATES ARMY. SCHEDULED (CARGO ONLY) FLIGHT OPERATIONS OF C-119 AIRCRAFT WERE SPONSORED JOINTLY WITH AIR MATERIEL FORCE PACIFIC AREA (AMFPA), AND SERVED TEN MAJOR BASES IN FAR EAST. 2710 AIR BASE WING WAS CREATED TO ADMINISTER OPERATIONS AT TACHIKAWA AB, ALTHOUGH IT WAS ORIGINALLY PROPOSED THAT 315 AIR DIVISION ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY FOR RUNNING TACHIKAWA. TACTICAL WINGS OF DIVISION WERE IN PROCESS OF BEING REORGANIZED. (SPECIALIZED MAINTENANCE WAS INTRODUCED AS PART OF DIVISION WING OPERATIONS.) NEW PROJECT THAT WAS PLANNED FOR IMMEDIATE FUTURE INVOLVED TRAINING OF JAPANESE TROOP CARRIER OPERATIONS PERSONNEL. 315 AIR DIVISION COMPTROLLER SECTION RECEIVED CONSIDERABLE CREDIT FOR BEING FIRST UNIT TO ADOPT MORE EFFECTIVE AND EFFICIENT MANTENANCE OPERATION PROCEDURES. MAJOR LOGISTICS PROBLEM RELATED TO CONVERTING OF PROPELLERS FOR C-119 AIRCRAFT. 315 AIR DIVISION WAS REQUIRED TO PROVIDE AIRLIFT SUPPORT FOR GRAND UNION PROJECT (USAF METEOROLOGICAL STUDY IN ALASKA). CLUSTER CONCEPT OF EMERGENCY AIRCRAFT DISPERSAL WAS DEVELOPED DURING PERIOD BETWEEN JAN AND JUN 56 AND 1955 DISPERSAL PLAN WAS REVISED IN LINE WITH THIS NEW CONCEPT. PRINCIPLES OF THEATER AIRLIFT OPERATIONS WERE PRESENTED BY BRIG GEN RUSSELL L. WALDRON (315 AIR DIVISION COMMMANDER) AT WORLD/WIDE TROOP CARRIER CONFERENCE THAT WAS HELD AT LANGLEY AIR FORCE BASE (AFB) VA IN JAN 56. NONE INCLUDES REVIEW OF SUBORDINATE UNIT AND STAFF AGENCY ACTIVITIES. ALSO INCLUDES ORGANIZATION CHARTS, AS WELL AS PHOTOGRAPHS (OF PERSONNEL, EQUIPMENT, FACILITIES, AND AIRCRAFT), AND MATERIAL COVERING 1955.
