Love the album but the cd case was damaged:(
The cd itself was in great shape, but I was disappointed to see that the back of the case had a big scratch. Now I have to replace it š

Continuing my Mariah Carey Album track by track reviews.
Butterfly is Mariah's 6th major studio album (excludes her MTV EP) and a massive turning point for the 'songbird supreme'. Recently divorced from her husband and manager Tommy Motolla, the new Mariah was far more overtly sexy after years of acting like the shy girl-next-door; The noticeable shift from pop to R&B with hints of hip hop only added to confusion for her fans. At the time Butterfly didn't achieve the commercial success of her last two albums, but today many would consider it her magnum opus.
1. Honey: Mariah's true hip-hop debut and absolutely one of her best uptempo songs. 9/10
2. Butterfly: Originally written about a possible later reunion with Tommy. The lyrics in this ballad are incredible and the message is very positive. 9/10
3. My All: Has a similar feel to "I Don't Wanna Cry", one of the best songs on the album and that's high praise indeed. 10/10
4. The Roof: Understated vocals and haunting melody in this pure R&B song. 10/10
5. Fourth of July: feels like many songs from "Daydream", that's not a bad thing. 8/10
6. Breakdown: Another Hip-hop track relying on lyrics and melody, impressive. 9/10
7. Babydoll: Mariah Collaborated with Missy Elliot for this soothing R&B track. 9/10
8. Close My Eyes: Very personal lyrics sung almost too softly. Most people love it though I've seen others that even hate it. 8/10
9. Whenever You Call: Another song that could have been on "Daydream". Breathtaking. 10/10
10. Fly Away (Butterfly Reprise): Butterfly club mix, enjoyable. 7/10
11. The Beautiful Ones: A prince cover and another song people love or hate. Personally, I liked it very much, despite it's long length and repetitiveness. It features Dru Hill harmonizing with Mariah. 8/10
12. Outside: Another intimate personal number similar to 'Looking In' from the Daydream album. This is incredible. 10/10
Final Album Rating: 8.92

This I believe is Mariah Carey's magnum opus and it's true! Released in the Fall of 1997, this beauty began with the chart topping "Honey" whose tropical/Navy/badass music video showed a new Mariah Carey where she's shown to be confident, sexy, and strong, a contrast to her nice next door girl image she projected from 1990 - 1996. Also, this was the album that had her merge her sound with Hip Hop which is evident in the Honey remix (not included on this album) with Mase. Within this album, are the autumn aesthetic gems: Butterfly, Breakdown, Close My Eyes, Outside, and Whenever U Call. There is also the golden fun summery Fourth of July. I tell you, this is a very visually beautiful masterpiece that should be a part of your R&B collection, your 1990's hits collection, your all things Mariah collection, and your lyrically best collection. The album cover should be enlarged to poster-size to be hung on your bedroom's walls if you're a die-hard Mariah fan like me. I love this album because it was released in a time when I was at my best on this earth we live on. I will never forget Fall 1997 as that was when I was a caterpillar-turned-butterfly person able to make his ultimate dreams come true. Buy Butterfly because it will make you feel amazing afterwards just by listening to it. The tour that followed this album is another fairy tale for another review. Enjoy!

Probably one of the best albums of the 90s.

Gorgeous vinyl- heavy and just sonically stunning. Packaging is beautiful as well. My favorite record so far in my collection. Butterfly has always been my fave Mariah- only had on cd and digital before this purchase. Wish all my vinyl sounded as clear and loud as this recording.

Picture discs are great on a wall, not a turntable. The way they are made isn't going to allow the music to be crisp and clear. If you know that going in, you will not be disappointed.

This CD is awesome, seriously. If you notice, it starts out with Honey, her first single off the CD which is catchy as hell but once you get to My All and continue on, you start to feel her desires and her unhappiness with her place:
The Roof showcases her reminiscing about the romantic moments with her ex, Fourth of July, although off key at many points, is so long and drawn out, but most importantly, heartfelt, I can't help but love it.
You really feel the way she misses those moments, "Truly, I could never feel the same as I felt that fourth of July."
Breakdown is what it says, continuing the memory and pain. She shows a happy face so others don't know she dwells on the moments.
She also manages to remake Prince's outstandingly emotional "The Beautiful Ones" which I loved. Her version is with Sisqo which came out surprisingly well IMO. I still can't really decide which is better but they're both good.
I didn't give the CD a full 5 because I know that one of her earlier releases were probably better but this one is truly great indeed.

5 stars for the iconic album. However, this vinyl meant to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the album leaves a lot to be desired. The packaging is incredibly cheap and my vinyl's plastic case arrived split on the bottom as others have noted their did too. I'm not sure why they elected to not do a traditional gatefold on this release especially as it is limited edition. Furthermore, getting the vinyl and insert out is difficult and damages, tears, and creases itself when removed from the sleeve. They also decided to not include any of the original liner notes from the album which is very disappointing as it included full lyrics. I wish they would've done this better justice on the re-release but I'm glad I own it now on vinyl!

'Honey' is a great R&B/Hip-Hop song to dance to (not a great song to sing along to!); 'Butterfly' is a very beautiful love song and I can definitely relate to the lyrics in the song; I liked the piano, drums and the vocals by Mariah and her background singers; 'My All' is a beautiful yet sad love song and I loved Mariah's vocals as well as the guitar and drums; Mariah is singing about her relationship with baseball player Derek Jeter and how she wanted to be with him; 'The Roof' is a good song to dance to and once again Mariah is singing about being with baseball player Derek Jeter (they almost consummated their romance on the rooftop); 'Fourth Of July' is a nice yet smooth song about Mariah being with a man on the Fourth of July (must have been some great fireworks!); Mariah and her background singers' vocals were lovely as well as the drums and keyboards; 'Breakdown' is a nice song with nice vocals by Mariah and her background singers; the rap by rappers Krayzie Bone and Wish Bone were 'okay'; 'Babydoll' is a good song about Mariah wanting her lover to be with her for one night; I liked the beats and vocals by Mariah and her background singers; 'Close My Eyes' is a nice love song and Mariah's vocals are nice as well as the beats; 'Whenever You Call' is a lovely song with lovely vocals by Mariah as well as the piano and I can definitely relate to the lyrics in the song; 'Fly Away' ('Butterfly Reprise') is a good song (sequel) to 'Butterfly'; the vocals by Mariah and her background singers were good/good song to dance to; 'The Beautiful Ones' is a song that was written by the late singer/songwriter Prince and the lyrics are very beautiful; it sounded as though Mariah and Prince were singing a duet/Mariah singing along with Prince; nice beats and the song was too long! 'Outside' is a lovely song with lovely vocals by Mariah and her background singers; nice melody with nice keyboards and drums. REST IN POWER to Mr. Prince Rogers Nelson (June 7, 1958-April 21, 2016): 'You may be gone but you will never, ever be, forgotten.'

Possiedo giĆ la versione cd, ma non potevo assolutamente lasciarmi scappare questa spettacolare versione picture disc in vinile che.. secondo me, non puĆ² mancare a nessun collezionista! Bella la cover ma soprattutto bellissimo album! Oltre ai famosissimi singoli Butterfly, My all e Honey contiene le meravigliose Close My Eyes, Whenever You Call e Outside.

I have been a big fan of the Butterfly album and so this was something I absolutely needed to have!! The packaging of the Vinyl wasn't great. A traditional sleeve would have been great. The sound quality was good and so was the print on the disc. However with my disc, the final tracks on both sides tend to skip. However I did notice that the disc would not skip when played at 45RPM so that could be the fault of my vinyl player.
