About a week ago, I reviewed the GameCube game WarioWare Inc. Mega Party Games$. I mentioned in that review that it was a port of a gameboy advance game, and this is that game. This is where WarioWare's roots form. Is it a good starting point or does it pail in comparison to its younger siblings and cousins? Let's look at it and see.

The story is wafer thin, but at least it HAS a story, unlike its GameCube cousin. Wario is watching TV one day and he sees a new game making a lot of money. He decides to get on the bandwagon but is too lazy, so he enlists the help of his friends to get his new games off the ground. Nothing fancy, and it takes a back seat once the games start, but like I said in the GameCube review, when was the last time you played a party game for the story?

As far as gameplay, it's pretty simple. You start at the bottom of the list with Wario, and beat a quota of games to move to the next developer. Do that a bunch and you win. Each micro game only lasts a few seconds, and has three levels of difficulty, and they gradually get faster the better you do. You get four lives to reach the boss game and finish the set. Thankfully the controls are responsive. Some of the developers even have a reward for reaching a certain record. Match or surpass these records to get a new game. As for the games themselves, if you came in from the GameCube version like I did, then all the games are intact, well, the single player games, at least. There are a few multiplayer games tacked in where both players hold a side of the gameboy advance. I haven't gotten the chance to play these with others but I could see them getting pretty hectic with the right people.

Presentation is a strong point for the game. It's highly silly, but then again, you were probably expecting that. When you start, you enter a name. Your name gets incorporated into the game a lot. For example, Kat and Ana have to rescue the Prince/Princess, aka you. It actually made me laugh the first time I realized just how much the game calls you out. One thing this version has that the GameCube does not is intro and victory animations for the characters, as well as a legit ending to the game. It's nothing special, but pretty silly and I won't spoil it.

In the end, should you pick up this game? Sure, if you can find it cheap. I paid twenty dollars for the game, and that was just for the cartridge. From what I hear, though, that's on the cheaper end for Gameboy Advance games. Some games go for triple what I paid for this, just for the cartridge. If you're looking for them complete in box, you'll probably be eating hot dogs for the rest of the month. But anyway, if you enjoy Warioware and want to see where it all started, this is it. The games did evolve but this is still worth owning. Good to have with you when you only have a few minutes, like waiting in line or riding the bus. If you happen upon it, pick it up, it's a great "On the go" Party game.

The game was in great condition and is a lot of fun! Would’ve been nice though if the save data was cleared before it was sent. I had to do that myself

The original Warioware game is just as much to play now as when it was first released. There are over 200 microgames that will challenge your reaction times. Lots of fun!

Beware Bootleg GBA Games. There are obvious telltale signs of bootleg games. These games may appear to be legit at first glance, but are inferior in quality. Most importantly, they usually will erase save data or otherwise function improperly.
I'll use the bootleg copy of Warioware: Mega Microgames that I purchased from onedog31 as an example: First off, the label art may be different than a genuine copy. (i.e., green checkered as opposed to rainbow) Also, words may be misspelled on label and plastic. (i.e., "LICFNSED" and "NIntondo") Some more subtle differences: If you open the bootleg cart to look at the circuit board you will usually see a battery for save data. The plastic is often malformed, and the cart will not have a normal fit into the GBA. Finally, the label should have a combination of two letters and/or numbers pressed into it. If you do not see these digits at least faintly, you don't have a legit copy.

I guess I'm the voice of dissent, but I didn't care for this game at all. Here's what I didn't like about Wario Ware:
-> Too easy. I got through the entire game, including unlocking all the other "games", in two days.
-> I was expecting strategic variety in the various "minigames", but almost all of them boil down to hitting a single button at just the right time (hit the "A" button at the height of a jump to sink a basketball shot...or jump off a ski lift, or catch a rod that's dropped into your hand, or catch a piece of toast launched from a toaster, or put a finger up a nose, or slice a bamboo shoot in half, or jump over an oncoming car, etc, etc, etc.) Almost entirely built on "one-shot" reflex timing, and not on strategy, logic, reasoning, skill, or anything else I'd look for in a game (or one of 200 games). The unlocked "games" (as opposed to the minigames) are, predictably, lame...they remind me of mind-numbingly dull space-invader wannabe games circa 1980.
I'd say the game was a decent diversion for 2 days, but it feels more like one of those demo disks with a dozen game "previews", except that it costs [money]. If nothing else, the company gets kudos for exploring new ideas and formats.
