Reviewed in the United States on April 6, 2010

"Tina Turns The Country On" is Tina Turner's debut solo album released in 1974. As of 2010 the album has remained unavailable on CD which makes the demand for it by Tina's ardent fan base very high. Copies of the vinyl release sell for big money on auction sites. Many have this album confused with material of Tina's that has been released on CD that implies this album has been put out on compact disc. The copies you see of Tina's country-oriented material on CD consists mainly of unreleased tracks from this country recording session. For example Loretta Lynn's "You Ain't Woman Enough To Take My Man" was never put out on "Tina Turns The Country On", but it is widely available on various buget releases. Nevertheless, let's hope this original album will become available on CD one day. Tina's debut solo album didn't chart, but she herself has admitted she liked it, possibly because for the first time in her career her husband, Ike, wasn't producing her, as United Artists brought in an outside producer to record Tina "country". Also, Tina wasn't forced to yell and scream like she did on her duo recordings with Ike.
There are many highlights here including covers of "I'm Moving On", "If You Love Me (Let Me Know)", "Help Me Make It Through The Night", and "Don't Talk Now". However, the standout jewel is Tina's soaring rendition of Dolly Parton's "There'll Always Be Music". That song was recorded by Dolly and Porter Wagoner for one of their duet albums and is forgotten by most Dolly fans. Written by Miss Parton, that song was actually written the same week as "I Will Always Love"! Tina, like Whitney Houston after her, actually makes this Dolly-penned song her own. It's sung beautifully by Tina and you can hear Tina's ardent faith in her vocals. Perhaps it was what she was going through with Ike at the time, but Tina has never sounded more wonderful on a song. "Tina Turns The Country On" was recorded in Inglewood at Ike's Bolic Sound Studio.
