After I heard Big Boi's first solo album "Chico Dusty", I was disappointed some; all the right ingredients were there but only half of the album was really good. This time around though, I'm blown away and pleasantly surprised with "Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors". This sounds like what should've came after "Speakerboxx" initially.
Basically, Big Boi holds nothing back here; the music dabbles in funk, electronic, rock, R&B, soul, and straight-up rap. Big Boi's rhymes are some of the best he's ever done in my opinion; still rapping about sex/street mentality but acknowledges that he's more mature now and there's more to life (God is praised a lot). The guests on here are amazing and compliment Big Boi's rhymes or are great in their own right.
A lot of people are still waiting for the next Outkast album but I have to say, if Big Boi keeps making records this good, he doesn't need Andre 3000 to help him lift the music up (even though I'd love to hear another Outkast album). That's how good this record is.
If you're a fan of Outkast, don't sleep on this album. This is a must-have.
If you're new to Big Boi, I'd recommend getting either "ATliens" or "Aquemini" to see if you like the style of his group Outkast.
If you like good hip hop that's creative and pushes boundaries, listen to the samples and see how good this is.
Recommended.

I'm a big time Outkast fan and I have all their albums. Enjoyed Sir Lucious Left Foot that came out a year or two ago. This album is awesome! Big Boi goes in a new direction on several tracks this album while still catering to long time fans with bass heavy club type jams. So far I've listened to it 3 times all the way through without skipping any track. My favorite tracks on here are Raspberries, Sorry, Thom Pettie and Shoes for Running to name a few. The track "Descending" made me think for a second that Andre 3000 was on the track or at least produced it. Great work all in all by an extremely talented artist. I think Big Boi is often overlooked for his lyrical prowess. In my opinion he is just as lyrical as Andre 3000 even though most think otherwise. Highly recommended album!

This album really impressed me. After Sir Lucious Leftfoot (his previous album), I was a little worried. Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors does not disappoint though. Big Boi's ability to present a project that still represents Dungeon Family yet gives HIS unique twist on it as opposed to trying to recapture the magic he had in the group with Andre 3000.
On songs like "The A" and "CPU", Big Boi breaks new ground without betraying the ATLien sound he helped to architect. Then on songs such as "Rasberries" and "She Hate Me", he brings his own mellow, love-song attitude to amazing tracks that most of his counterparts are afraid to venture to.
Throughout the album, you can be guaranteed music that is both great to ride around to in your caddy or play it at a party and forget about changing the disc until it is over.
While is ex-partner is still deciding if he still loves H.E.R. or not, Big Boi is showing that he won't stop making great music until HE decides to. I will be here to enjoy it.

The vinyl for this album is dope. The album is divided into four sides over two splotchy purple records with a grinning grill on the label. The album is definitely intended to have 4 sides. Big Boi always comes correct with his LPs...
The album itself is a definite grower. When I first heard it, some parts would clash. But after letting it sink in, they don't sound so jarring. The album is equal parts swagger & somber. Tight verses as expected. Best track is Ludacris and T.I bringing it on the ATL anthem 'In The A.' Luda even throws in a sneaky diss at T.I.'s days in the 'trap' at the end!
'Descending,' & 'Objectum Sexuality' are two other highlights.
I feel a new Outkast album on the horizon... 2014 Hopefully!

This is a great 2nd (or technically 3rd) solo album from Big Boi/Daddy Fat Sacks, etc. It sounds and feels like an Outkast disc without Andre Benjamin. Great artwork for this disc, far more interesting than the cover for Sir Lucious Left Foot...The Son Of Chico Dusty [Explicit]
Raspberries!
As an Outkast fan while I would love to hear a new project but I'll eventually get over it as Big Boi continues to grow musically and put out more solid music.
Buyer Beware:
While Amazon provided this [explicit] version for 5duringapromotional"5 during a promotional "5duringapromotional"5 This Week Only" you should be aware that the Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors (Deluxe) [Explicit] version contains 3 additional songs.

This is a mediocre album at best. Sounds like Big Boi went a little too radio friendly with poppy choruses, and catchy hits, Thus completely ignoring the talent that we all know Big Boi can achieve. Another example of the best rappers gone pop? I think so.

This CD is the best blend of Hip Hop and modern folk. With guest appearance by Phantogram and
Little Dragon, it brings a new element that is a welcomed change from today's monotone rap at is featured on the radio. With that said, there is also a mix the old Big Boi that everyone has grow up on and appreciates listening to. With additional features with Killer Mike and T.I. you get tracks that remind you that this album came straight from the ATL. All in all, it is a solid album, with a unique and enjoyably different sound that is expected from both members of Kast.

5.0 out of 5 stars Würdiger Nachfolger!

I don't seem to understand why Big Boi doesn't get the recognition he deserves. He was one half of the biggest rap duo to ever come out of Atlanta, Outkast, and had relative success with his debut album. However, this release has been pretty low key. But, it doesn't mean it doesn't serve an amazing review. Here are my thoughts.
ASCENDING: A spoken word introduction to the album. (5/5) THE THICKETS: The soft blend of the soulful, catchy hook provided by Sleepy Brown with three lyrically masterful verses, making this one of the most radio friendly tracks on the album. Later down the line, this deserves to be a single. (5/5) APPLE OF MY EYE: Boi relieves the heydays of Outkast with one of the catchiest, pop-influenced tracks on the album, relevant of the Outkast classics 'The Whole World' and 'So Fresh, So Clean'. This definitely deserves to become the next single. I guarantee the hook will get you singing along after a couple of listens. Something like this could easily reignite Boi's chart career. (5/5) OBJECTUM SEXUALITY: Another blend of powerfully structured electronic beats to an anthemic hook from collaborator Phantogram makes this one of the darkest, moodiest yet stadium-like tracks on the album, that is very reminiscent of the 'Atliens' era. (5/5) IN THE A: Boi takes it right back to basics with this link up with fellow rappers T.I. and Ludacris, making it one of the hardest, hip-hop based tracks on the record. Not completely my cup of tea, but as collaborations go, it's not a bad one. (3.5/5) SHE HATES ME: Boi takes on what is known as a 'rap ballad' in the industry with this powerfully successful colloboration with Kid Cudi. At this point to start to wonder why Boi hasn't chosen to promote this album here in the UK. Another track worthy of being released as a single. (5/5) CPU: Phantogram returns with another electronically structured rap link-up. Something that appeals to both the rap enthusiast and the downtown clubber. You can just imagine a futuristic visual to accompany this for television airplay. (5/5) THOM PETTIE: Blasted right back into the days of 'Stankonia' with this link-up with long-time collaborator Killer Mike. For me, this one has slightly too many explitives and too much of an unusual structure to become one of the album's stand out tracks. (3.5/5)
MAMA TOLD ME: Boi takes on the world of mainstream pop with a link up with pop lothario and Destiny's Child star Kelly Rowland. After being released as the album's lead single, it achieved moderate success around the world. It's one of the best tracks on the album, and it's highly worthy of five stars. (5/5) LINES: By now, we start to realise that Boi's anthemic hookups with Phantogram are some of his best solo tracks. This time, he also enlists rising star A$AP Rocky to join him on the rap offensive. It's perhaps not as strong as some of the other tracks on the album, but it shines enough not to just be listed as a filler. (4/5) SHOES FOR RUNNING: Boi fulfills his promise of making another street anthem after the popularity of 'Follow Us' from his debut album. This time, worldwide star B.o.B joins him to take it up to another level. In a competition, it would be very difficult to choose between the two. (5/5) RASPBERRIES: The introduction, as haunting as 'Ms Jackson' almost thirteen years ago, sets the stage for another dark southern rap ballad. This time, Boi takes on the talents of Mouche and Scar to add some flavour to the otherwise plain electronic bass chord. It surprises me more than it pleases me, as it features little Boi, and more of the two featured artists. Perhaps the weakest track on the standard album. (3/5) TREMENDOUS DAMAGE: The super ballad of the album. An anthemic piano riff combined with an inspirational hook from collaborator Bokso makes this prime candidate for a Billboard Hot 100 chart topper. The key change towards the end is also enough to lift you from your feet. (5/5) DESCENDING: The acoustic guitar comes out for the close of the standard album. This pretty much instrumental close is a pleasing solution to a rollercoaster ride of an album. (5/5) HIGHER RES: Now we move on the deluxe edition of the album, which usually features tracks that are sub-standard or not good enough to make the standard album. And this is clearly one of them. The autotuned vocals combined with a completely unstructured instrumental make this the worst track on the album. (2/5) GOSSIP: One of two promotional singles released prior to the album. Now, i can't understand why this didn't make the standard edition. It's flashes of brilliance combined with some classic OutKast beats makes this one of the most successful hip-hop tracks Boi has produced in the last couple of years. (5/5) SHE SAID OK: The second of two promotional singles released prior to the album. The most expletive of the album tracks, but perhaps the most soulful, blending essences of throwback soul and jazz to make this a perfect close to the deluxe edition of the album. (5/5)
After all of the ups and downs, you can clearly see that Big Boi has a high level of talent. From his time with OutKast to his own solo projects, he really has seen both sides of the musical spectrum. "Higher Res" and "Raspberries" are weakest tracks of the album, but apart from that, everything else is pretty much solid. So, a great effort. I can't wait to see more from both Boi as a solo artist and OutKast.
