HOW TO WATCH (original) (raw)

The six America’s Cup team bases are located around Port Vell: Emirates Team New Zealand is at the corner of Moll de les Drassanes, which leads to the World Trade Center. INEOS Britannia and Alinghi Red Bull Racing are next to the Aquarium, Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli and American Magic bases are on the southern side of the port towards W Hotel, whereas Orient Express Racing Team is on the Moll de Ponent. Generally, access to the team bases is not permitted, but this is a matter for each team to advise. You can still get very close and watch all the action as the teams dock in and out each day.

There are a lot of options to follow the action–watch from different places on different days to give a varied experience. Plaça de la Rosa dels Vents offers great views of the teams when they are going in and out of the port before and after racing. Port Olímpic is close to the team bases of the UniCredit Youth and Puig Women's Teams, while the beaches of St. Miguel, Barceloneta, and Somorrostro, with their fine, golden sand and shallow waters are also good vantage points to watch when the racing is on: Just be sure to have your mobile fully charged to follow the races LIVE. Racing is streamed lived and available free to watch on YouTube, Facebook and the official America's Cup website.

The America's Cup Fanzones are in Plaça del Mar and Bogatell. They allow a direct view of the race area and on-water action. The giant screens, which go live when the Race Village stage show starts, allow you to view all the action once the race day begins. Fanzones are ‘free access’, as well so no tickets apply. Opening times for exhibits, food and entertainment offerings are 12:00–10:00pm*. The Plaça del Mar Fanzone (12:00–8:00pm) overlooks the race area, so it is a great vantage point. The Port Olímpic viewing area, which overlooks the UniCredit Youth and Puig Women's team's bases, is at the northern end of the race area, so it is great to view the start and action around the turning marks at that end.

The America's Cup Race Village along Moll de la Fusta opens at 12:00pm* and closes between 10:00pm–11:00pm*, depending on the day and scheduled activities. Access is FREE, so no tickets apply, but there is a capacity control system in place to prevent overcrowding. The Race Village is where you will find the main stage and giant viewing screens, which feature the daily show with professional hosts on the main stage, along with a range of activations and exhibits, as well as food and entertainment offerings. There is no direct view of the water from this space, but the jumbo-sized viewing screens allow spectators to stay in the middle of the action.

If you own a vessel or are planning to charter one, areas will be dedicated for yachts and small craft around the racecourse perimeter, outside of the race box ‘boundary’. We encourage you to go out on the water only if you have a vessel that is 5 metres or longer.
If you plan to get on the water amongst the action, then you MUST visit our on-water info&rules page and register your boat.

We want everyone to enjoy the racing so if you're out on the water, make sure you know the rules and are up to date with the latest info

RACE COURSE

The race course is about 1.7nm long (about 3km) and between 0.5nm and 0.8nm (0.9km to 1.5km) wide, with boundaries on all sides that the boats must stay within. All the spectators’ boats have a designated yellow zone to look at the race.
It's called a windward-leeward course, named after the orientation of the course directly into the wind and away from the wind. From the start, the yachts race directly upwind – to windward, round the first mark then downwind, or to leeward. Rinse and repeat.
At three minutes to the start, the boats "enter" – sailing from above and outside the start line, and from opposite ends. This is the beginning of the "pre-start". The teams take turns over which side they enter from, as the boat coming in from the right-hand side has the advantage – with the right-of-way.
