Frederik L. Schodt Wins The Order of the Rising Sun Award

Japanese government awards Gold Rays with Rosette to manga translator


Prolific manga translator and scholar Frederik L. Schodt reports that he is receiving The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette (Kyokujitsu Jūkō Shō) award from the Japanese government this year. Schodt translated several works of manga pioneer Osamu Tezuka, such as Astro Boy and Phoenix. Schodt was a personal friend of Tezuka, and he would later write The Astro Boy Essays: Osamu Tezuka, Mighty Atom, and the Manga/Anime Revolution.

Schodt's other books include the seminal text Manga! Manga! The World of Japanese Comics, his Dreamland Japan: Writings on Modern Manga follow-up, and Inside the Robot Kingdom: Japan, Mechatronics, and the Coming Robotopia. Besides Tezuka's manga, Schodt also translated or co-translated Henry Yoshitaka Kiyama's The Four Immigrants Manga - A Japanese Experience in San Francisco 1904-1924, Keiji Nakazawa's Barefoot Gen, Masamune Shirow's Ghost in the Shell, and Naoki Urasawa's Pluto.

Previous recipients of the same award have included the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team manager Tommy Lasorda and Star Trek actor George Takei.
