Kosei Tanaka suffers suspected Orbital fracture, no brain injury suspected (original) (raw)
Yesterday we saw Japanese youngster Kosei Tanaka (10-0, 6) [田中恒成] retain the WBO Light Flyweight title as he over-came Thai challenger Palangpol CP Freshmart (14-2, 8) [คู่เอก พลังพล ซีพีเฟรชมาร์ท]. Sadly for Tanaka the win was marred by some serious facial damage and it appears that that damage maybe a lot more serious than just typical cuts and scrapes.
This morning Tanaka attended a press conference and stated that he was sorry for not staying and talking to the press yesterday. Instead he went to hospital due to issues with double vision and
nausea, two things he had suffered through the fight.
In hospital he was given a brain scan which has, thankfully, come up clean and shown no ill effects for what was a very tough fight.
As a result of the clean brain scan the suspicion is that Tanaka has suffered an Orbital Floor Fracture.
The fighter stated that he was caught with a jab early and suffered double vision in his left eye afterwards. After that he would damage to his right eye and struggle to see his opponent.
He ended the press conference to apologise to WBA champion Ryoichi Taguchi, asthe potential eye injuries will force a delay to their proposed December bout.
It should be noted that Tanaka's press conference today wasn't a long one as he has a doctor's appointment in Nagoya in regards to his eyes, and there is a chance we'll know more about the severity of the injury in the next few days.
