The American University of Greece

Welcome to The American University of Greece (AUG), an institution with a rich heritage and a forward-looking vision. Established in 2021 in Massachusetts, AUG plays a multifaceted role in offering degree programs, validating and granting degrees for The American College of Greece (ACG), awarding honorary degrees, and supporting ACG’s mission. With roots stretching back to 1875 when American missionaries established a school for girls in Smyrna, Asia Minor, ACG will celebrate its 150th anniversary in 2025. After relocating to Athens in 1923 at the invitation of the Greek Prime Minister following the 1922 Smyrna disaster, ACG continued its commitment to educating a diverse, multinational student body, guided by the mission “Not to be served, but to serve” (non ministrari sed ministrare). Accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC, now NECHE) in 1981, ACG offers a range of accredited undergraduate and graduate degrees through partnerships with U.S. and U.K. institutions, including the Open University.

Recognized by the Massachusetts Board of Higher Education in 2022 and accredited by NECHE in 2023, AUG operates from Boston and recently launched the AUG Global Campus in 2024 to provide American-accredited online degree programs. ACG continues its educational mission from Athens through Deree - The American College of Greece and The Alba Graduate Business School. As we build on our rich legacy and look toward new horizons, AUG remains committed to fostering academic excellence and innovation in education.
