Reviews
The War Master: Self-Defence takes four very different writers and allows them the chance to tell four very interconnected tales that explore the War Master as a character and his place in the universe and the Time War, contrasted with a Doctor post-Time War. Derek Jacobi... continues to excel under the direction of Scott Handcock, as the sets continue to stick towards the darker stories. 9/10.
From making the most of Jacobi's talents to a fan-pleasing reunion well-realized, Self-Defence is another triumph for a range that has taken Big Finish from strength to strength.
The War Master: Self-Defence is a good set if you’re looking for an entry into a new part of the Whoniverse. The entire set has the essence of Doctor Who all over it, and provides a more intimate look into The Doctor’s greatest foe. Derek Jacobi is truly excellent, bringing humour and light-heartedness along with the dark sinister side fans know from The Master.
With each release, The War Master continues to demonstrate why it is the top tier of all Big Finish ranges, Doctor Who or otherwise. Derek Jacobi laps up every rich piece of dialogue and has such huge presence, you can’t help but enjoy the ride. Producer and director Scott Handcock has a fantastic vision for every volume release.
