1 INTRODUCTION
Great changes took place in Dylan's life in 1973. After the filming of Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid Dylan decides to relocate his home & family to Malibu, California. In the summer Dylan meets Robbie Robertson who also has moved to Malibu and plans for the first tour in seven years start to take shape. Dylan's contract with Columbia expires and instead of renewing, he signs with David Geffen's Asylum Records. A new album with The Band, Planet Waves is recorded is just over a week in November.

13 July | Release of the album Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid. |
August | Dylan appears as sideman on a Barry Goldberg recording session. |
August | Release of the single Knockin' On Heaven's Door/Turkey Chase. |
August | Rehearsals with The Band in Shangri-La Studios in Malibu for a possible "comeback" tour. |
September | Dylan signs a recording contract with Asylum Records. |
November | Recording of Planet Waves at the Village Recorder in Santa Monica with The Band. |
16 November | Release of Dylan, consisting of outtakes from the Self Portrait sessions. The album is generally looked upon as Columbia's "revenge" for Dylan's signing with Asylum. When re-released on CD in 19xx it was renamed Dylan (A Fool Such As I) ! |

Live history
Only Knockin' On Heaven's Door has been played live. The debut came during the second concert of the 1974 Tour with The Band in Chicago 4 January. Since then it has been performed on each and every tour except the Gospel concerts in 1979 1md 1980.
