A Montreal poet with a profound attraction to Greece, David Solway has been overshadowed by the like character and interests of Leonard Cohen, Canada's most popular poet in the 1960s. Solway too is a romantic writer whose ironic voice and program of self-denial do not wholly disguise his emotional nature. The son of Sam and Sylvia Rabinovitch Solway, he was born in Montreal and educated at McGill University where, in 1962, he earned a B.A. in philosophy and English. Solway has lived and traveled extensively in Greece. In Canada, from 1966 to 1968 he worked as a writer and broadcaster for the CBC in music and public affairs. Since 1971 he has taught poetry at John Abbott College, Sainte Anne-de-Bellevue, Quebec. He and his wife, Karin Semmler Solway, have four children.
