The Planet Hollywood restaurant chain, owned by movie stars like Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger, filed for bankruptcy protection Tuesday, a day after it closed nine of its 32 restaurants in the United States.

The Orlando-based company and 25 of its subsidiaries sought protection from its creditors while it reorganizes its finances.

The company will soon file a reorganizing plan that calls for upgrading several of its restaurants and menus.

The closed restaurants were in Chicago, Costa Mesa, Calif.; Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; Gurnee, Ill.; Houston; Indianapolis; Maui, Hawaii; Miami and Phoenix.

Planet Hollywood operates nearly 80 movie-themed restaurants, including five in Canada-- in Toronto, Montreal, Niagara Falls, Ont., Edmonton and Vancouver.
