The Chesterfield Canal was completed in 1777, making it one of the earliest built during the 18th century Canal Age – the work of the pioneering engineer James Brindley. It was his final project, into which he poured all the experience gained on his other works – including multi-staircase flights of locks, and Norwood tunnel, as long as any other of that era. It is also one of the most beautiful.
