"Captain America: The Winter Soldier" proves that Cleveland's West Shoreway is a splendid place to flip a car, or two, or three, or... (Marvel Studios/Disney Studios)
Yes, they closed the West Shoreway and ticked off legions of commuters. But at least the Russo brothers put it to good use.
Cleveland is all over Marvel's "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," which opens nationwide Friday, April 4. The movie is a lot of fun. Directors Anthony and Joe Russo did a terrific job. I caught and early press screening and will circle back with a full review next week closer to opening.
No plot spoilers here, just a rundown of some of the locations.
Cleveland plays Washington, D.C., in the film. The West Shoreway was used for an extensive action scene in which The Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) attacks Captain America (Chris Evans), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and The Falcon (Anthony Mackie). Folks who followed the filming last June will recall the explosions, flames, gunfire and car chases.
The city is also clearly visible as fights continue along West 3rd Street and Lakeside Avenue in the shadow of the Justice Center.
Nick Fury’s SUV is chased and attacked at the corner of East 6th Street and Rockwell Avenue next to the Cleveland Public Library. That same SUV is pursued down Superior Avenue, where we get our first glimpse of The Winter Soldier.
The Cleveland Museum of Art, especially its sparkling atrium, also receives a fair amount of screen time.
You can play spot Cleveland as you watch the film, although there were also several interiors shot here in Cleveland Heights, Tremont, and inside the Western Reserve Historical Society.
Scarlett Johansson and Chris Evans steal a smooch during filming of "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" in Cleveland.
The infamous kiss between Black Widow and Captain America made the final cut. It takes place on an escalator in Tower City Center (first captured for the world by Plain Dealer photographer Scott Shaw).
