The Milton-Bradley Microvision was the first hand-held cartridge-based system, presaging such units as the Nintendo Game Boy, Atari Lynx and Sega Game Gear. The Microvision designer was Jay Smith, who went on to design the GCE/Milton-Bradley Vectrex.
