CoSTREAM - understanding stroke and Alzheimer (original) (raw)

LATEST NEWS

CoSTREAM project concluded

The CoSTREAM project successfully concluded on May 31, 2021. Following a start in December 2015, CoSTREAM has investigated the link between stroke and Alzheimer's disease over the course of 66 months. Our research results have been published in over 135 peer-reviewed scientific papers, with additional papers currently in preparation or available as pre-print non-reviewed publications.

Consortium meets online to discuss progress and final stretch

On November 23-24, the CoSTREAM consortium met online to presents its latest results and to discuss the final steps towards the completion of the project in May 2021. Members of the external Scientific Advisory Board were once morepresent for the meeting and added valuable feedback on the interpretation of results and how to best publish and proceed. We'd again like to thank the members of the Scientific Advisory Board for their contributions during the meeting!

World Alzheimer's Month

September 2020 marks the ninth World Alzheimer’s Day and Month to raise dementia awareness and challenge stigma. The theme for this year’s World Alzheimer’s Month campaign builds on the theme from 2019: Let’s talk about dementia. people all around the world are encouraged to understand the importance of recognising dementia as a disease and challenging the stigma that surrounds the condition. This ‘back to basics’ approach concentrates on awareness-raising, with a simple, easy to understand and impactful message, which is broad and adaptable to every country. Found out more.

Overview of presentations in the third period

Over the course of the third period (month 37-54), CoSTREAM was presented at several scientific events, including the Alzheimer's Association International Conference (AAIC) in Los Angeles, held from July 12-18, 2019, and the European Congress of Radiology 2019 (ECR 2019) in Vienna, held from February 27 - March 3, 2019. Four posters were presented at the AAIC 2019 with various results from CoSTREAM. At ECR 2019, the platform of the organ-on-a-chip model was displayed together with CoSTREAM dissemination material at the EIBIR Lounge.

CoSTREAM published 84 original research papers

So far CoSTREAM researchers have published an astonishing 84 original research papers since the start of the project less than 5 years ago! You can find all the published papers in the publications section of this website.

CoSTREAM at ECR 2020 (online edition)

Learn about CoSTREAM during ECR 2020! Information and promotional material is available in the virtual EIBIR exhibition, and an animation video about the CoSTREAM project will be played on various occasions between lectures and sessions. CoSTREAM is also included in the congress newspaper - the article can be found in the media section.

CoSTREAM meetings in Vienna

For the past two days, the CoSTREAM consortium met in Vienna, Austria to discuss the latest research results and the direction of the project. The members of the external Scientific Advisory Board were also present for this meeting and provided valuable feedback on the interpretation of results and how to best publish and proceed. We'd like to thank the members of the Scientific Advisory Board for their contributions during the meeting!

World Stroke Day 2019

World Stroke Day is observed on October 29 to underscore the serious nature and high rates of stroke, raise awareness of the prevention and treatment of the condition, and ensure better care and support for survivors. On this day, organizations around the world facilitate events emphasizing education, testing, and initiatives to improve the damaging effects of stroke worldwide. The focus of the campaign this year is stroke risk and prevention. The latest analysis of the Global Burden of Disease shows that the lifetime risk of stroke for over-25s has increased and now stands at 1 in 4. The urgent need for action at individual and population level is only matched by the incredible potential for a huge reduction in stroke. While our efforts on World Stroke Day are largely directed towards raising public awareness of the steps we can all take to reduce our risk, the 2019 campaign is a key component of WSO’s strategic commitment to ‘Cut Stroke in Half’. You can read more about how the campaign and the wider initiative are linked in this Lancet editorial. Find out how you can help.

Medical Delta features CoSTREAM research principles

The Medical Delta introduces the METABODELTA programme, which features CoSTREAM research principles in an article on their website. It highlights the multidisciplinary approach that we have been applying in CoSTREAM; from genetics and metabolomics to clinical practice. In CoSTREAM, we're also looking at imaging and other epidemiological factors - but the principle remains the same. Read more about the METABODELTA programme here.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Common mechanisms and pathways in stroke and Alzheimer's disease

CoSTREAM is a five-year research project combining epidemiology, genetics, metabolomics, radiology and neurology. We will use comprehensive preclinical knowledge and clinical data to discover new molecular pathways that explain the co-occurrence of stroke and Alzheimer's disease, and determine how these relate to structural and functional pathology on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and to molecular imaging biomarkers on positron emission tomography (PET). Furthermore, we will investigate shared and disease-unique compensatory mechanisms and develop new treatment strategies targeting areas of interaction between the two diseases.
