Roald Dahl, Lucian Freud, and Alfred Hitchcock rejected honours from the Queen (original) (raw)
No thank you, Ma’am! 277 who rejected an honour from the Queen
For most it is the ultimate recognition of their talents and contribution to society.
But for 277 of our great and good, an honour from the Queen was unwelcome – or simply not illustrious enough.
Author Roald Dahl, painters Lucian Freud and Francis Bacon, along with film director Alfred Hitchcock were among those who turned down awards between 1951 and 1999.
Snub: Children's writer Roald Dahl turned down an OBE in 1986
The official records, published by the Cabinet Office, cover anyone who refused an honour in the New Year or Birthday Honours list.
Until now, reports of those turning down awards from the Queen have been based on leaked information or people themselves volunteering the details.
The definitive list was released only after a freedom of information battle, when the Information Commissioner ruled it could be made public because those on the list were dead.
Both Alfred Hitchcock, left, and Evelyn Waugh, right, turned down CBEs
Artist Lucian Freud and writer Graham Greene also refused honours from the Queen
The records show that artist LS Lowry and scientist Francis Crick turned down awards because of their political beliefs.
Lowry, renowned for his ‘matchstick men’ paintings, was a serial refusenik, who rejected five awards including a knighthood. He told one friend that accepting an honour would be degrading, claiming they were ‘ten a penny’.
Crick, the Nobel Prize-winning biologist who discovered the structure of DNA in 1953, turned down a CBE in 1963 because he thought the monarchy was ‘out-of-date’.
However, he later relented and accepted the Order of Merit in 1991, an honour given to 24 living individuals who have distinguished themselves in the arts and sciences.

Professor James Watson, 83, his fellow Nobel winner, said: ‘When the Queen came to visit Cambridge in 1962, Francis made sure he was not around. He didn’t think Britain should be ruled by a monarchy.’ Lucian Freud also rejected a CBE in 1977 but accepted a Companion of Honour in 1983 and an Order of Merit in 1993.
He said: ‘ I remember my friend [ballet choreographer] Freddie Ashton said, a long time ago, people are always asking me whether to accept honours or not and he said: “I’d accept a bottle of gin”.’
Playwright JB Priestley was also quick to say No to a life peerage in 1965 and a Companion of Honour in 1969 but later accepted an Order of Merit in 1977.
The list also revealed how some turned down awards because they hoped to be handed something better in the future.
Hitchcock refused a CBE in 1962, because, in his view, it did not do justice to his contribution to British culture.
However, he accepted a knighthood from the Queen four months before his death in 1980.
Roald Dahl turned down an OBE in 1986, also claiming only a knighthood would do – mainly because his wife was desperate to become Lady Dahl. Sadly, the children’s author held out too long and died without any honours in 1990.
TV presenter Hughie Green refused an OBE in 1960, which his daughter Linda Pentl has previously blamed on his desire to be awarded a knighthood.
After his death in 1997, she said he had craved the honour ‘so badly’ but was a victim of his own stubbornness.
