Snooker starlet Ross Muir beaten by veteran Knowles in exhibition challenge (original) (raw)

VETERAN Tony Knowles beat Scots teenager Ross Muir to win the exhibition Super 6s tournament at the Crucible today.

Knowles won their one-frame final by 52-18 after clearing up the colours.

Musselburgh's Muir, 13, had battled his way into the frame before Bolton's Knowles, 53, showed his class, sinking a long yellow to set up his 27 break.

The event was World Snooker's first experiment with the six-reds game, but none of the game's current elite players were involved.

Former World Championship semi-finalist Knowles beat Neal Foulds in their semi-final, while Muir defeated 15-year-old Welsh player Jak Jones.

The draw was set up so that veterans featured in one half and juniors in the other.

Tickets were free and a healthy crowd attended, however Super 6s will only have a future as a pay-to-enter event if modern stars become involved.

Several have already expressed their willingness to play in the shortened version of the game, providing Super 6s tournaments do not replace events already on the schedule.

Organisers would have hoped for quick-fire break-building today, but there were short safety battles and plenty of stray shots in today's semi-final and final.

The frames were typically over quickly though, with the final lasting eight minutes and 48 seconds.
