Finland’s membership in NATO
Finland’s security environment was fundamentally altered when Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Based on a reassessment of the security policy situation, Finland decided to apply for NATO membership in May 2022, and it became a full member in April 2023.

Development of conscription service
On 5 March 2020, the Government appointed a parliamentary committee to examine the development of general conscription and the fulfilment of national defence obligations. The Committee submitted its report on 26 November 2021, proposing extension of the call-up system to the entire age group.
