History and Directory of Electric Cars from 1834 (original) (raw)

This incredible solar powered steam engine was built in the early 1890's in Pasadena California by a farmer to pump water for his ostrich farm! He must have been quit a character back then! The "Sun Motor" was constructed with 1,800 mirrors 2 feet long by 3 inches wide and was supported on a light iron framework. In the focus of the mirrors was a boiler, 13 feet 6 inches long, painted black. The boiler held about 100 gallons of water, which was fed automatically. It was capable of pumping 1,400 gallons of water per minute. It seems that nothing is new when it comes to alternate energy. [IMAGE]

| ELECTRIC VEHICLE COMPANIES SINCE 1834 Copyright 1987-2001 by Frank Didik All Rights Reserved The following list of of electric vehicle manufacturers was compiled over the past 15 years from a variety of sources including the archives of the Electric Car Owners Club, early magazine advertisements, personal knowledge and other sources. This directory is by no means complete and additional vehicles manufacturers continue to be added as they are found. This list represents some of the information that will be included in my upcoming electric car book and CD-ROM. The book and CD-ROM will include details about each vehicle including photographs or drawings of most of the vehicles. 1834 (yes 1834) Thomas Davenport 1838 Robert Davidson 1851 Charles B. This car is a front wheel drive electric-gasoline hybrid car and has power steering. A gasoline engine supplements the battery pack. Between 1890 and 1910, there were many hybrid electric cars and four wheel drive electric cars. Electric cars were more expensive than gasoline cars and electrics were considered more reliable and safer. With the development of the starter motor for gasoline cars and increased range of gasoline cars, most people public interest switched from electrics to gasoline by 1915. 1898 Eaton 1898 - 1903 Eisenach 1898-1900 Madelvic 1898-1900 Patin 1898-1902 G.E.C. 1898-1902 Kuhlstein 1898-1903 Jenatzy 1898-1907 Opperman 1899 - 1900 Elecctra 1899 - 1900 Elgin 1899 - 1901 ?
