Soccer: Crew's Wil Trapp makes debut for U.S. national team (original) (raw)

Crew SC midfielder and Gahanna native Wil Trapp has made his first appearance for the United States senior national team.

Trapp, 22, came on as a second-half substitute as the United States played at Chile in an exhibition game. Chile scored two second-half goals to earn a 3-2 win.

With the United States leading 2-1, Trapp came on as a substitute in the 59th minute. He replaced Mix Diskerud, a player who nearly signed with Crew SC last summer, as the second substitute made by coach Jurgen Klinsmann. The United States began with a 3-5-2 formation but positions changed liberally throughout the second half, with Trapp occasionally looking as much like a right midfielder as the holding midfielder role he typically plays.

Trapp was the second player to make his debut for the United States on the night. Defender Steve Birnbaum, who started, was the first.

On Twitter, St. Charles and Ohio State product and Crew teammate Matt Lampson wrote, “ Congratulations, you're making all of Columbus proud. (Your) whole team is watching."

Crew captain Michael Parkhurst, who has made 25 appearances for the United States senior team, wrote, “Big congrats to our boy @wil_trapp on his USMNT debut! First of many.”

Crew midfielder Justin Meram, who is currently in Australia representing the Iraqi national team, wrote, “ Wahooooooooo way to go willy @wil_trapp on your first Cap with the USMNT. Well deserved and making @ColumbusCrewSC extremely proud!”

Crew midfielder Ben Speas, like Trapp also a homegrown player with the Crew, wrote, “Congrats Wily on the first cap! We're proud of you brother”

Trapp and his United States teammates will return to the country and resume training in Carson City, Calif., in advance of a Feb. 8 home exhibition against Panama.

Trapp made 15 appearances for the United States U-20 team and also represented the country at the U-18, U-15 and U-14 levels.
