Newspaper Articles Newspaper Articles 17th March 1829 News An inquest was held in this town on Wednesday last, before P. Hodgson, Esq., on view of the body of a man named James Mason (aged 26, of New Houses), who lost his life in William Pit. The deceased was employed at the bottom of the shaft to hook the baskets to the rope, and at the moment a basket was being lifted by the engine, the end of a protruding rod caught one of his knee caps, and being unable to disentangle himself he was carried up the shaft along with the basket, but to what height appears uncertain, though it would seem from the facts of his body being not much mangled, and his having survived the accident several hours, that he had not been much elevated. Verdict of the coroner's jury — Accidental death. Newspaper transcript kindly provided byWest Cumbria Mines Research.
