Newspaper Articles Newspaper Articles 22nd August 1878 Accident In Wellington Pit An Accident occurred in Wellington Pit, on Monday afternoon, to an elderly man named James Lynch. Lynch is a shiftman in the pit, and on the afternoon named he was engaged in what is termed "stowing an arch," that is, filling it with stones &c., the space between the wooden frame of an arch and the roof, when by some means one of the supporting legs of the arch came down, bring with it some of the stones. Deceased was cut and bruised a little, and had one of his shoulders dislocated. He was conveyed home to the Newhouses. Newspaper transcript kindly provided byWest Cumbria Mines Research.
