Mining Fatality At Whitehaven
On Friday afternoon, Mr. G. Falcon (coroner for West Cumberland) held an inquest at the Fox and Hounds Inn, Preston Street, Whitehaven, on view of the body of John Wilkinson, who was killed in Wellington Pit the day previous. Mr. James Egerton was chosen foreman of the jury. Mr. R. W. P. Oswald (Deputy Government Inspector), Mr. A. Sharp (Agent for the West Cumberland Miners Association), and Mr. E. Gregory (Manager of Wellington Pit) were present. The deceased was a trapper at Wellington Pit, Whitehaven. He left his work at 12.30 p.m., to go out of the pit, accompanied by two other lads named William John Walker and William McKinney. The deceased stopped back to clean his boots while the others went on. After the lads had proceeded a short distance they heard a shout and went back, when they saw the deceased underneath the second tub of a sett, dead, having been run over by the sett. The jury returned a verdict of "Accidental death."
