Newspaper Articles Newspaper Articles 13th August 1903 Pit Accident At Whitehaven While John McGuiness, aged 29 years, of 9, James Place, Quay Street, Whitehaven, was following his employment in the early hours of Thursday morning, down William Pit, Whitehaven, filling a tub, some stone dropped about seventeen feet and fell on his back. He was removed to the Whitehaven and West Cumberland Infirmary about four a.m., and it was found that his back was bruised, and that he had had his left knee severely cut.
