Mine Boys on Strike at Whitehaven

Three Thousand Workers Idle

Nearly 3,000 mine workers are idle at Whitehaven as a result of the action of some 300 boys who have gone on strike on the ground that they are not receiving advances in wages to which they claim they are entitled under the working arrangements at the colliery company's three pits at Wellington, Haig, and Ladysmith.

The strike started at the Wellington pit on Tuesday, and spread to the other pits yesterday. The management offered to go into the whole question if the lads would return to work, but they refused, and consequently the hewers and shiftsmen also had to cease work owing to the dislocation of the coal getting operations causes by the absence of the boys. The stoppage is a serious matter for the town, which is already suffering from unemployment.
