Keith Tippett discography (original) (raw)
[updated 5/2/14]
Born Bristol, 25 August 1947; piano, composer, arranger, educator.
For over forty years Keith Tippett has been at the forefront of contemporary European jazz and new music - as a pianist, composer, bandleader, band member and musical educator. Tippett's work ranges from his unique free improvisation as a solo pianist and with duos and small groups such as the quartet Mujician, to compositions for, and performances with, contemporary classical groups (including the Composers' Ensemble, Kokoro and the Kreutzer String Quartet) and large-scale works for Jazz Orchestra.
Keith Tippett left Bristol in 1967 and came to prominence in London in the late 1960s pursuing a wide range of projects with his Sextet, whose recordings featured the first appearances of Elton Dean, Mark Charig, and Nick Evans; with his 50-piece ensemble Centipede [a who's who of British avant-jazz featuring members of Soft Machine, Nucleus, The Blue Notes, and King Crimson amongst many others] and in other combinations.
From around this time, when he first saw them at Ronnie Scott's, Tippett has been inspired by and closely associated with the Blue Notes - Chris McGregor, Dudu Pukwana, Mongezi Feza, Johnny Dyani and Louis Moholo - after they had eventually settled in London following their South African exile, as well as fellow South Afrikaner Harry Miller. The cross-fertilization and overlap of musicians that occurred in the 1970s in particular is well documented on the Ogun label, and shows Tippett playing with Louis Moholo, Radu Malfatti, Dudu Pukwana, Johnny Dyani, Harry Miller [the label's founder], Mogezi Feza, Peter Kowald, among many others.
In the early '70s Tippett also moved easily between jazz and rock becoming moderately well-known even among rock audiences for his studio-based contributions [sometimes with KT Group members Charig and Evans] to three successive early King Crimson albums. His association with Crimson led to a lasting friendship with Robert Fripp, who has produced five of Keith's albums over the decades to follow.
This period following also saw the existence of Ovary Lodge, the group that also included Julie Tippetts. The umbilical cord connecting Tippett to South Africa has continued through his involvement with the Dedication Orchestra in the early '90s, founded to keep alive the South African legacy after all the musicians but Louis Moholo had died, and which has released two recordings on Ogun: Spirits rejoice and Ixesha (Time).
Other irregular combinations have included work with, for example, a quartet including Peter Brotzmann and Harry Miller (sadly, not officially documented); a duo with Howard Riley that has produced three recordings; membership of Derek Bailey's Company; and duos with Stan Tracey, Andy Sheppard, Peter Fairclough, and most recently Giovanni Maier.
A steadily developing interest in music for film was presaged in 1978 when The Ark recorded Frames: Music For An Imaginary Film. In the 1980s Keith Tippett collaborated as soloist and improvisor with film-makers and dancers in TSW's experimental Body On Three Floors as well as composing for the Comic Strip's comedy feature Supergrass. In 1991 he was invited to compose for the controversial TV piece The Holy Family album, written and narrated by the late Angela Carter; the same year saw a collaboration with violinist/composer Alex Balanescu on music for Cowboys, a series of five cartoon films. As part of the 1995 Meltdown Festival at the South Bank he appeared at London's National Film Theatre, improvising as a soloist to four short silent films by the Polish director Starewicz.
However, in spite of his extensive discography with groups of varying sizes, it is as a very individual solo pianist that Keith Tippett seems to be mainly recognized: one whose sound worlds lie outside most conventional means of production and whose use of plastic detritus, pebbles, toys, woodblocks and other objects moving round inside the instrument atop the piano's strings, have defined his approach for over thirty years now. The term Mujician, aptly bestowed on her father by Inca Tippetts, was given to three FMP solo albums - though there have been several other solos for other labels since - but thereafter this was taken up as the name of a quartet comprising Tippett, Paul Dunmall on reeds, Paul Rogers on bass, and Tony Levin on drums; beginning with 1990's The Journey this group has released several CDs on the US Cuneiform label. In 1996 Tippett and Mujician visited South Africa for a collaboration with the Zim Ngqawana's group Ingomaand; then in October 1997 there was a reciprocal tour of the UK organized by Contemporary Music Network. Keith Tippett has also recorded with his wife, Julie Tippetts - in duo, in trio with Willi Kellers, and in other groupings - prepared a large scale work for 21-piece band, Tapestry, for the 1997 Bath Festival, and a piece for string quartet and piano for the 1996 Bath Festival.
As an educator, Keith Tippett has a natural aptitude for coaxing new freedoms from musicians of all ages and abilities. He has worked with junior schoolchildren in artist-in-education projects and in extended workshops with aspiring jazz musicians in Britain and other countries, including Germany, Italy, Soviet Georgia and South Africa. He has been co-director of the Dartington International Summer School jazz course for the last decade, holds Honorary Fellowships at both Dartington College of Arts and the Welsh College of Music and Drama where he is currently a visiting tutor in piano and improvisation and director of the College's Jazz Ensemble.
In the most recent years he has given improvisation workshops at the University of Bristol Music Department and relaunched the Rare Music Club, the concert series he originally started in 1992. Besides regular solo and small-group work, 2002 saw the world premiere of Dance of the Dragonfly, commissioned and performed by percussion group Ensemble Bash; composer-in-residence on a new music course in Aldeburgh with Joanna Macgregor; and (following a Festival appearance in Victoriaville, Canada in May), a further performance in Lisbon, Portugal with his current twenty-one piece jazz orchestra Tapestry.
It is unfortunate that of all his contemporaries, only Keith, who continues to perform all over the globe, has virtually never performed in the U.S. - the exception being two sets one night in NYC at the original Knitting Factory site on Houston Street in early 1991, which group comprised the Balanescu String Quartet and Andy Sheppard, with whom he also duetted. We here at DMG feel that this is a shame of the greatest magnitude, and strongly urge any booking agents, festival promoters, influential artists, writers, musicians and listeners out there to get on the case and help bring him back to these shores!
[The above biographical sketch was cobbled together from information at Tippett's management site, Mind Your Own Music,
and Peter Stubley'sEuropean Free Improvisation site]
With only 2 exceptions [Horizons - and the commercially intended but unreleased first KTG album, for Revolution, on acetate, although I am in possession of a CD transfer of a test pressing with a machine-stamped matrix # HS 12 001 which predates that recording] I have personal copies of all the RELEASED recordings listed below, [as well as much unreleased, mostly live, material NOT listed here by virtue of it's never having been slated for release], so you can be assured of the veracity of the entries.
Obviously all corrections/additions are most welcome [for instance, Tippett was also a session musician on several folk and jazz albums primarily on the pre-Charisma sister label B&C in the early '70s. I think I've found them all, but...].
PLEASE NOTE: I do not claim to have listed every last LP and CD edition that exists, although I have made an attempt to include all important ones - to which I will be adding. As of 2012, Keih Tippett has lead, co-lead, or contributed to over 110 separate albums since his earliest recordings in the late 1960s.
All Contributors will be acknowledged!!!
Naturally, I'm always on the lookout for live recordings and other rarities if anybody wants to help this archive...
I have not yet completed filling in all the assorted minutiae [producer, date of recording, date of initial release of each edition, complete list of players involved on each cut, etc.] - which I will be adding to in the weeks to come - but as this discography below represents the most complete one currently available for KT anywhere on the web -that I've been able to find - this should give all researchers and enthusiasts the best headstart into investigating the works of one of the most exceptional musicians living!

Like any other bodies of work, King Crimson cuts [and alternate mixes/versions] have appeared on various compilations of their recordings, not mentioned here. However, the next listing may be of some interest...

Also, a FREE DOWNLOAD is available from Fripp's DGMlive site of an alternate [earlier] studio version of"Cadence And Cascade"!

TTTP NEVER RELEASED LP [Emanem 3308; US]
[would have] contained second half of concert announced on the next entry - the Emanem ed. of TNT :
From the back cover of the Emanem edition of TNT [next listing below]:
"The whole of the first half of the concert - the public debut of the the two piano improvising duo TNT -
is included on this record.
For the second half of the concert, the two pianists were joined by Julie Tippet and Evan Parker. Most of
this quartet section is on "TTTP" (EMANEM 3308), while the remaining final piece of the evening is included
in the anthology "Music not on any other record 1" (EMANEM 3315)"
However, EMANEM 3308 was not released due to musician's dissatisfaction of their work. Neither was EMANEM 3315, because..
"No, this wasn't released either - in those days, my announcements were bigger than my bank account!
Some of the other stuff planned for that "Music not on any other record 1" anthology - #3315 - has made it to CD:
SME on 4003, Rutherford on 4019, Lacy on 4024, AMM on Matchless 03." - Martin Davidson, owner and producer of Emanem label

WORKING WEEK Fire In The Mountain LP [10 Records/Virgin 2397; UK] released 1989 Fire In The Mountain CD [10 Records/Virgin 2397; UK] released 1989 Weekend became Working Week when singer Alison Statton left. Core members Larry Stabbins and Spike recruited Juliet Roberts on vocals after initial singles with Julie Tippetts or Robert Wyatt on vocals. Several albums later Roberts departed, leaving most of the lead vocal chores on this to Julie Tippets [although in the screwed-up typography design for the credits, it can be mis-read that she is only on 2 songs!] Keith is on two cuts, "Fire In The Mountain" and the instrumental "Waiting In Vain".
ALSO, listed in Terry Hounsome's ROCK RECORD discographies books published by Facts On File/Record Researcher Publications is:
Keith Tippett - Both Sides Now (Polydor 2359007; existence unconfirmed) LP Likely an error on their part; if anyone can shed light on this....?
!.. from Biffy the Elephant Shrew "I found a sale listing for this album by the Tokens; note the catalog number: TOKENS|Both Sides Now LP Buddah UK 2359007"
This likely explains the source of the error - Manny
