Welcome to the British Pteridological Society (original) (raw)

The society for fern enthusiasts

The Society was founded in the Lake District in 1891 and soon became the focal point for fern enthusiasts throughout the British Isles. Today it continues to provide a wide range of information about ferns, through its website and by publishing regular journals, leaflets and books, and organising formal talks, informal discussions and outdoor meetings. The international membership includes those interested in gardening, natural history and botany, both amateur and professional. It is a friendly society run on a voluntary basis.

The Objects of the Society are to promote all aspects of pteridology by encouraging the appreciation, conservation, cultivation and scientific study of ferns, horsetails, clubmosses and quillworts through publications, meetings, the provision of grants and other appropriate means.

The Society is affiliated to the Royal Horticultural Society and Plant Heritage (NCCPG), and supports recording and conservation activities with other botanical societies

Benefits of Membership

Publications
All members receive the Pteridologist, which contains a wide range of articles of interest both to growers of ferns and their varieties and to other fern enthusiasts, and the Bulletin, which reports the Society’s activities. The Fern Gazette contains scientific articles on many aspects of ferns, horsetails, clubmosses and quillworts worldwide. Members not wishing to receive the Fern Gazette pay a reduced subscription.

Meetings
During the winter Indoor Meetings are held, with talks, exhibits and informal discussions. In the summer there are Garden Visits and Field Meetings (day, weekend and week) in fern-rich parts of the country and overseas, to see, record and study ferns in the field and to enable those with little or no previous experience to become more familiar with species in their natural habitats. Academic meetings are held from time to time, including international symposia.

Other Activities

A Booksales Service gives members the opportunity to acquire old fern books not easily obtainable through normal sources, as well as new books hot off the press!

Regional Groups give opportunities for meeting with other fern enthusiasts in your own area.

Special Interest Groups provide opportunities for members with similar interests to share ideas and experiences.

A Reading Circle passes the American Fern Journal among interested members.

A variety of Merchandise is available to members, including polo shirts, sweatshirts, fleeces, ties, mugs, bags, notepaper and greetings cards.
