On September 11, 1972, John Dean gave a list of George McGovern staffers and supporters to the IRS. During a hearing on December 20, 1973, John Dean gave this list to the Congressional Joint Committee on Internal Revenue Taxation. Newspapers carried the story the next day. The story of another enemies list was minor news, especially amid calls for Nixon's resignation and other Watergate fallout. While the Washington Post put the story on the front page and printed the entire list, the New York Times had just a few paragraphs on page 21.
