HERALDRY IN FLORENCE'S 'ENGLISH' CEMETERY
GLI STEMMI NEL CIMITERO DEGLI INGLESI A FIRENZE
King Edward III as King ArthurOne loves Florence's 'English' Cemetery for its cosmopolitan democracy, where slaves and nobles, serfs and scholars, deserters and generals, are buried side by side, where often servants were given first class burials, and which was visited by the ex-slave Frederick Douglass. Over forty of our tombs have heraldic coats of arms, the shield, sometimes the crest, the motto, the supporters (such as the heraldic Lion and Unicorn supporting England's arms on our EU/British passports), either sculpted or incised, on them, reflecting an archaic medievalizing world handed down generation to generation. Some of those flaunting coats of arms on their tombs lacked the right to them, for instance women especially, such as Julia Savage Landor and Jemima Hunter Kellett. The 'right to bear arms' (war having been between consenting male adults only), intensified one's identity, one's heritage, one's privileges. But many, though having the right to armorial bearings, were not using them on their tombs, as in the case of the republican poet husband, Walter Savage Landor, or the Anglo-Irish Gerard de Courcy (whose records would be blown up in Dublin Castle by the Republican forces there). The Royalist Felicie de Fauvau had to flee Republican France's guillotine to be an exile in Florence where she flaunted aristocratic medievalism. Florence herself, though often a republic, is filled with palaces with the stemma of nobility affixed to their walls, but Elizabeth Barrett Browning changed her naming of the Palazzo Guidi by the Pitti Palace to the democratic 'Casa Guidi' instead. The American Consul, James Lorimer Graham, has his Scottish coat of arms on his tomb when this was against America's Republican laws, its crest a 'Pelican in its Piety'. He sheltered Lord Byron's Claire Clairmont. Medieval Chivalry's codes about who had the 'right to bear arms', the quasi-primitive totemic animals of epic similes that served to identify men who covered themselves, including their identifying faces, with costly armour, which was available only to the one per cent, came conjoined to a code of Judaeo-Christian and Roman chivalric ethics, of protecting the weak, of self sacrifice, of 'Noblesse oblige', women and children off the boat first, of having high standards to live up to, that would be lost with gunpowder, nuclear bombs against civilians, and the present NRA and horrific massacres of school children.

This vast tomb is for Robina Wilson, from Edinburgh, wife to Leopoldo Cattani Cavalcanti of Montecatini, who laments on its two inscriptions, one in Italian, the other in English, that they were never separated in marriage, but in death they must be, Protestants and Catholics then not being permitted to lie in the same consecrated soil. In his grief at her death from cholera he has had her grave moved here to be more conspicuous and has erected over it a tomb modelled on that for the Cardinal of Portugal in Florence's San Miniato, the most though disguised Catholic tomb possible at the entrance of a Protestant cemetery. The laws now are more merciful. The inscription also gives her parents. From NDNB, Wikipedia entries on Andrew Wilson we learn that he was a landscape artist, admired even by Napoleon, and a dealer in Old Masters, such as were also A64 / AUGUSTUS WALLIS, A29 / WALTER SAVAGE LANDOR, both in Sector A, and Jackson Jarves, whose wife 'Libby', C5 / ELIZABETH (RUSSELL SWAIN) JARVES, and C63 , JAMES MILLINGEN , in Sector C.

Sixteen years later than her burial a still-born Wagnière child is laid at Catherine Jane Penfold Baroncelli's feet. The father of the child, Alfred Wagniere, has no burial record in the cemetery archives nor any remaining tomb, yet is named conspicuously on the cemetery's gate: 'ALFRED WAGNIERE', perhaps in error. His Swiss banker relative is buried in Sector C (*C6 / PIERRE SIMEON WAGNIERE) in a tomb with a book opened to Biblical verses one can no longer decipher, on a reading stand. The Swiss family, contributing financially to the nineteenth-century Duomo facade, have their stemma there. Descendants of the family in America came with their genealogy and the photograph of their stemma at the Duomo.****

Christopher Webb Smith and his wife, Annie Jessie MacKenzie Smith, who pre-deceased him, share a most beautiful sarcophagus, sculpted by Pietro Bazzanti, mirrored in that for Sophia Tennant (D18) in Sector D, both of which have been cleaned by Daniel-Claudiu Dumitrescu. Following Webb Smith's Civil Service in Bengal he also visited South Africa, publishing a book with his paintings of its culture and its wild life, now in our library as a gift from a member. In his retirement in Florence he served loyally with the Anglican Holy Trinity Church. Wikipedia adds that 'From 1849 to 1860 Smith worked on a critique of the 300 paintings in Florence's Pitti Gallery. The entire work was lost with the sinking of the steamer Black Prince off the coast of Portugal'.

This could be the tomb of A24 / GEORGE MARTIN ROBIGLIO's Scots grandmother. Notes and Queries a hundred years ago saw it as 'Jane Robiglio, d. of Francis _____.' Then the tombstone was discovered in two broken pieces built into a wall. It is now mended and restored to its rightful place. The Webbs note that in some notes accompanying a National Portrait Gallery caricature which depicts Jane's father Francis Anderson, W.S. ('writer to the signet'), he was profoundly deaf and after years as a bachelor married his sister's maid, the lowly-born Miss Martin. When asked by the Earl of Wemyss why he had not chosen someone of higher rank, he replied that he had not 'fashed himself', i.e. been bothered, to court a fine lady, besides, he liked the lassie and she liked him. It seems that Miss Martin may have introduced the twin-bearing gene into the family, for it looks from the Scottish baptismal records as if this Jane had twin brothers, David and John, in addition to another Francis. The stemma includes a coronet.

His maternal grandfather was General Lord Robert Edward Henry Somerset, his grandmother, Lady Louisa Augusta Courtenay, daughter of William Courtenay, 8th Earl of Devon, his father, Horace Marryat, wrote travel books about Scandinavia, while his uncle was Captain Frederick Marryat who wrote marine novels and who is discussed in Richard Hengist Horne, A New Spirit of the Age. A43/ VICOMTE HENRI DE LA BELINAYE/ FRANCE/ENGLAND
He was born, 19 November 1799, the younger son and third of four children of the Marquis Armand Marie de la Belinaye (d. 1836) by his wife Marie Louise Julia (1771-1859), Breton aristocrats who emigrated at the time of French Revolution. His parents were married in a Roman Catholic chapel in London and later re-married in a civil service in Paris, 15 August 1821. He and his older brother Armand were educated in part at the French Academy, Penn, near Beaconsfield, Bucks. He qualified as a surgeon, had a Harley Street practice from 1823 to 1842, and served as physician to the French, Austrian, and Russian Embassies, as Physician Extraordinaire to the Duchess of Kent, and as surgeon to an Italian troupe of opera singers which included Giulia Grisi. During this time he dropped his title, resuming it after 1842 when he closed his medical practice, for instance, in October 1836 he received a ticket of admission to the British Museum Reading Room as "Henry Belinaye, Esq." He lived at 17 George Street, Hanover Square; later in Fulham; married before 1840; was widowed before May 1847, when he married Sarah Maunch. By the first marriage he had at least one daughter, Evelina Anne, who in 1858 married Thomas Lance. At some point Belinaye moved to Florence, Italy, where he died on 10 January 1873. http://www.victorianresearch.org/Obscure_contributors.html#belinaye There is a 4/1851 mortgage of Northlands to him by Charles Crosbie, who is also buried in this Sector (A20).

NDNB/Wikipedia entries: Prior to the breaking out of the Crimean War he was dispatched on a special mission early in 1854 to the expected seat of war, and traversed on his mission Serbia, Bulgaria, and part ofRoumelia, crossing the Balkans on his route. He was subsequently for a short time principal medical officer with the army, and served with it in the field as senior deputy inspector-general, and was present in this capacity and attached to headquarters at the time of the affair of Bulganac, the Alma, capture of Balaklava, battles of Balaklava and Inkerman, and siege of Sebastopol. His rewards were a medal with four clasps, the fourth class of the Medjidie, and the Turkish medal. He was gazetted C.B. on 4 February 1856, became K.C.B. on 20 May 1871, and was named honorary physician to the Queen on 21 November 1865. On 19 July 1859 he was promoted to be an inspector-general of the medical department in Cape Town, and on 1 May in the following year was placed on half-pay and received a special pension for distinguished services. He had married, on 27 February 1844, Elizabeth Campbell, only daughter of George Gibson of Leith. He died at 34 Via Montebello, Florence, on 24 January 1876, and his will was proved on 21 March under £12,000. A2G/ A64/ 357/ GEORGE AUGUSTUS WALLIS/ ENGLAND
National Gallery online: 'Born at Merton in England, in 1788 Wallis travelled to Italy, visiting Rome, Naples where he painted the surrounding countryside, and Sicily. He became a member of the Royal Academy in 1806, and operated as an art dealer in Italy, and later Spain, most often working for British clients. He settled in Heidelberg in 1812, but returned to Italy in 1817 where he taught at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence and painted frescoes and portraits. He died in Florence in 1847'. Stefano Tumidei adds that he came to Italy accompanying George Greville Earl of Warwick, was friends with the Icelandic sculptor Thorwaldson and with Goethe, many of his paintings for their strong colouring being more favoured in Russia. His career is similar to Andrew Wilson's. A monographic book on him was published by Monika von Wild in 1966. This is one among several tombs with a portrait medallion: A64/ GEORGE AUGUSTUS WALLIS by Aristodemos Costoli, A15/ ANNE SUSANNA (LLOYD) HORNER by Francesco Jerace; AB7/ INA BOSS SAULTER, by Ettore Ximenes;B4/ ELENA NIKITICNA DIK, NATA AKZYNOVA by Fyodor Fyodorovitsch Kamensky; C3**/ THOMAS SOUTHWOOD SMITH by Joel T. His father is the botanist Marchese Vincenzo Baldinotti who discovered a rare lily that came into the possession of the Capponi family. This very grand tomb is no longer occupied, the eleven-year-old being removed to the Allori Cemetery when this one was closed in 1877. One wonders, from its use of 'I.B' for Joachim and Boas on the two gateposts, if the father was Freemason.

B2/ WALTER BENTINCK YELVERTON/ IRELAND/ & ANNA MARIA (BINGHAM) YELVERTON/ IRELANDBentinck Walter, at nine, Frederick and two girls, Mary and Cecilia, were left orphans by the death of their mother. Their father, Walter Yelverton, had now left politics and was cursitor in theCourt of Chancery in Ireland. In 1808, 17-year-old Bentinck was admitted to Trinity College Dublin as a Fellow Commoner. He attained a Bachelor of Arts in the summer of 1814. He subsequently secured a commission in the 6th (or 1st Warwickshire) Regiment of Foot but narrowly missed service in the Napoleonic Wars. He was with the regiment in Cape Town when word arrived that his father had died in Ireland in June 1824. Bentinck Walter Yelverton duly succeeded to Belle Isle but his attempts to manage his father's affairs and to look after his two unmarried sisters earned him an unfortunate blot in his copy book when the Adjutant's Roll noted he had been 'Absent without Leave from 31 March 1826'. We have an enchanting essay on his regimental spoon contributed by Michael Ayrton: <yelvertons.html>. He subsequently retired on half-pay. In June 1829, he married his cousin, the Hon. Anna Maria Bingham, eldest daughter of John Bingham, 1st Baron Clanmorris of Newbrook, County Mayo. Their daughter Anna Maria Cecilia was born in 1833. Bentinck died in Florence in 1837, aged forty-five, and was interred in the Swiss-owned 'English' Cemetery. His daughter died in Nice aged just 13 in 1846 (B3).

Their descendants have visited these tombs and the Waterloo Society lists them. Jemima of a Scottish father and thus with a stronger legal backing for sexual equality than from an English father nursed her son and her husband while they were dying of tuberculosis, then died herself. She thus briefly became the legal head of their family. JLMaquay, Diaries 7/9/1854 'up early to attend funeral of Mrs Napier Kellett. Father mother and son have all died within 16 months.' Her daughter, Jemima Hunter Kellett, places her magnificent tombstone with its armorial bearings: she will marry the following year the Portuguese Jew Elias Henrriques Melhado, the son of Daniel and Judith Melhado, and whose family, like the Barretts, were also in Jamaica. There is careful documentation in the Scottish archives protecting Jemima's property against Elias, nor do we find him violating those terms. Jemima Melhado died at 75 in 1908, Elias Melhado at 91 in 1918, both in the Jamaican region of London, St Marylebone. B20/ JOHAN CLAES LAGERSVARD/SVEZIA
He is the last descendant of his noble Swedish family, and has served in the Swedish and Norwegian Legation during the reigns of four Swedish monarchs and the Revolutions in Europe. With him, much later, is buried his wife Sophie Hugues, who had already been sculpted on the tomb as sadly taking leave of her husband, both in classical garb. Nearby is the tomb of B92/ AURORE (GRÅBERG DE HEMSO) ECKHARDT DURCKHEIM MONTMARTIN, the adopted daughter of Brigitte Hugues, Sophie Hugues's sister. The Lagersvard tomb is sculpted by the Swedish sculptor, Johan Niklas Bystrom, who worked in Rome with the Icelandic Danish sculptor, Bertel Thorvaldsen (Þorvaldsson). Within an ourobouros (a serpent devouring its tail, for eternity) is a bee. Kelly Searsmith wrote, noting that the bee is the Egyptian hieroglyph for royalty, and that Pliny described bee hives being floated down the Nile so they could pollinate crops. (Monsanto pesticides kill bees.) Anna Porcinai sent a van-load of lavender plants which the Roma planted and now the cemetery is filled with contented bees, pollinating busily amongst these fragrant bushes. The Cemetery was subject to thirty years of weed-killer usage and no birds sang. When we stopped it six years ago, the blackbirds took to singing gloriously. Was the marble for Lagersvard's tomb transported from Carrara to Rome, by way of Livorno, then back again to Tuscany? Jan Claes Lagersvard

B24/ 1171/ MARY [KYD] DE DORNBERG/ ENGLAND/INDIA
Mary Kyd's father, Lieutenant General Alexander Kyd of the Bengal Engineers, was a relative of the Lt. General Robert Kyd who founded the Botanical Gardens in Calcutta. William de Dornberg, who participated with the British against Napoleon, was pensioned in 1831, thus is too early to be her husband, perhaps her father-in-law. Wikipedia: 'Robert Kyd made a request in his will that he be buried without any religious ceremony in the botanical garden that he founded (Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanic Garden), but was instead interred in South Park Street Cemetery. He also left behind specific payments to be made to his native servants "Rajemahl Missah ... in retribution for the unsuitable education given to him, entailing separation from his native soil and kindred. To the other native known by the name of George, in reparation of the injury done him by his former master, in alienating him from his tribe (understood Rajpoot), converting him to Christianity, and secluding him from all future connection with his family, the monthly sum of six rupees during his life; to both on condition of their continuing to serve Major Alexander Kyd during his residence in India. . ." Major Alexander Kyd was a relative of Robert and was the father of James Kyd (1786-1836) and his brother, also a Robert Kyd (d. 1825), who became shipbuilders. Kyd street and the locality Kidderpore derive their names from this family'. There seem to be further mixed-race Alexander Kyds, who settled in Austria, one of whom may be this lady's father. She is thus more cosmopolitan than she is English.

C19/ COUNTESS EDITH MARGARET (MOZLEY) GIGLIUCCI/ENGLAND/ **C20/ CONTE MARIO GIGLIUCCI/ ITALIA/ ENGLAND
The two Counts Gigliucci are the sons of Clara Novello, the English singer of the great music publishing family. Her father, Vincent Novello, was an Italian who married an Englishwoman. Clara Novello opened the 1851 Crystal Palace Exhibition her voice filling the whole vast hall without electronic support, B32/ HIRAM POWERS' 'Greek Slave' being placed at the centre of that Crystal Palace. Mary Somerville in her autobiography gives a fine account of listening to Clara Novello, in old age, still singing exquisitely. The counts in turn marry two sisters, daughters of the Jewish Lord Mayor of Liverpool, Charles Mozley. Garibaldi was frequently a visitor to Clara and her son, Count Mario, who fought for him during the Risorgimento. Clara (like Eleanora Duse) had to resume her singing career to support her family when their property was lost. Based in Fermo, except when in exile, their Florentine residence was the Villa Rosa which now houses Syracuse University in Piazza Savonarola, Florence. The American University paid for the restoration of these tombs, whose pietra serena was crumbling into sand, by Alberto Casciani, and Aureo Anello contributed the work of Daniel-Claudiu Dumitrescu conserving the iron and brass railings around them. A further monument for this family with their stemma punning on lily is to be found in the Santissima Annunziata.

One realizes that Jane Austen's hero, Darcy, with his vast acres and annual rents, is similarly Irish, though Austen does not say so. His descendant, Miles D'Arcy, came to see, wearing the ancestral ring with the insignia of the coat of arms, and then had the tomb restored.

Hart; D108/ THEODORE PARKER by William Wetmore Story; D127/ JAMES ROBERTS, by Joel T. Hart?; E12/ JAMES LORIMER GRAHAM, JR by Launt Thompson; E9/ WALTER KENNEDY LAWRIE by Pietro Bazzanti,F27/ PHILIPPINA (SIMONS) CIAMPI, Joel T. Hart(?) The Raeburn portrait of 'Walter Kennedy Lawrie of Woodhall, Lauriston', 1815, now in Philadelphia may be of his grandfather, likewise the copy of Thomas Busby's A General History of Music, 1819 with his bookplate, currently on sale by an Italian bookseller, indicating it may have come to Italy by way of his grandson. His spouse is Clorinda, his son Walter, who marries a Giulia, both of whom we see sculpted on this tomb in classical garb, as we see also with the tombs for B20/ JOHAN CLAES LAGERSVARD and D126/ CHARLES WITAL. The Webbs add: 'Walter Kennedy Lawrie I've been trying to disentangle the ancestry of this man, who I suspect was consumptive – certainly at 31 he was young to die. Lord Malmesbury, from time to time an incompetent Foreign Secretary, remembered him in his Memoirs, published in 1885: ''There was at that time [1832] in Florence a Scotch banker of the name of Lawrie, who had a very good gallery of pictures. He had married a most beautiful girl of poor parents in Florence, having taken her as a child and educated her for his wife. We made her acquaintance, and found her a very pleasant and ladylike person.' The wife was Clorinda Aretini, and (to judge from the fact that WKL received Protestant burial) it was a mixed marriage. She, their one son, another Walter Kennedy, and his wife Julia, were all buried up at San Miniato. The son too died youngish, on 1 February 1875, although it's not quite clear how old he was – 'in the flower of his age' according to his monument, so not much more than 40, if that. The 'good gallery of pictures' included one that was believed to be a Raphael, but is now thought to be a copy of the 'Madonna di Loreto' in the Musée Condé at Chantilly. The younger Walter Kennedy Lawrie in the 1850s had it scrutinised by experts in Rome who pronounced it to be genuine (only modern x-rays have proved otherwise). What the elder Walter Kennedy's activity as a banker was I don't know – Malmesbury is the only authority that I have for this occupation – but where his money came from is hardly in doubt. His father William Kennedy was a Jamaica planter, born in 1769, who in 1802 inherited Laurieston, an estate in Galloway, from a Walter Sloane Laurie. As people so often did in these circumstances, he added the name Laurie (or Lawrie) to his own. He already had children, including a Thomas who probably stayed in the West Indies, and a William who probably came with him to Scotland, but I think he was married again, in Edinburgh in 1805, to the daughter of another West Indies planter. Our Walter – who was given the name of the man from whom his father had acquired the Galloway estate – looks like the child of this marriage and was born (someone says) 20 August 1806, but I can't find out where. It was at some point in that year that his father William received a letter from the manager of his estate in Jamaica, which was called Woodhall, reporting on the purchase of slaves and lamenting the shortage of females, which was due to 'the lengths to which the abolition business has been carried in England'. William Kennedy died in 1811, and I suspect that the Raeburn is a portrait of him, not of a Walter. Not only do these two names often get confused, but I simply can’t find any previous Walter Kennedy Lawrie. The fact that William Kennedy took the additional name only on his inheritance in 1802 rather argues against it. The name Woodhall was later given to the family's estate in Galloway, which was inherited by the son William already mentioned, who would on this reading be Walter's older half-brother. Was young Walter delicate? Was that why he turns up, aged not yet 20, in Florence? (He subscribes to Vieusseux in February of that year.) And did he transmit a weak constitution to his son? What he did transmit was money. If Malmesbury was right that his wife's family were poor, they suddenly found that as the child's guardians they had the management of a fortune. And part of it – which I have only just found out – consisted of palazzi, one in Borgo SS Apostoli and one on the opposite bank of the Arno, which housed the much-frequented Hotel variously called the Quattro Nazioni or Quatre Nations. There seems to have been a bit of a spat with an hotelier who thought he owned it before the guardians put in one of their own – an Aretini – as manager in 1839. They were now calling it the Albergo Reale dell' Arno, although to judge by Vieusseux, people went on staying at the Quatre Nations'.

E48/ SIR CHARLES LYON HERBERT, M.D./ ENGLANDA doctor, he was created a Knight, 1836. JLMaquay, Diaries 28/12/1855 'attended Sir C. Herberts funeral at 8 this morning'. His tomb was sculpted by Felicie de Fauveau, a French Royalist sculptress living in exile in Florence. B42/ ISABELLA BLAGDEN publishes a fine essay on Felicie de Fauveau. Its pietra serena caused it to fragment. We found one piece with the chalice and could only identify it from the photograph in Lord Lindsay's scrapbook, now in the possession of his heir, Lord Crawford, in Scotland.

F128/ ARNOLD SAVAGE LANDOR/ ENGLAND/SWITZERLAND
The figure on the tomb is Mrs Walter Savage Landor, Julia ThuilIier Savage Landor, mourning the death of her son Arnold Savage Landor whom she did not permit her husband to see while he was growing up. At the end she threw her husband out of the Villa Gherardesca in San Domenico, Fiesole, that he had given them, leaving him homeless in the streets of Florence until the Brownings took care of him, lodging him with their former maid, Lily Wilson, in Via della Chiesa. Not a happy marriage. Walter had been much in love with an earl's daughter, Rose Aymler, writing exquisite quatrains to her. She died of fever in India and is buried there with his verse on her tomb. Then he met Julia Thuillier, the pretty daughter of a bankrupt Swiss banker, at a dance in Bath and married her. Their son Arnold is described by a family member as being paralyzed with mad eyes, sounding very much like a syphilis patient. In less unhappy days she had her portrait with her children Arnold and Julia painted by Trajan Wallis, the son of A64/ GEORGE AUGUSTUS WALLIS, who is buried in Sector A. She spends a fortune on the son's tomb, nothing for her husband's. Walter Savage Landor's is at A29, this one for their son as far from him as she can get, with her back turned to it. Buried next to this tomb is Rosa Madiai, imprisoned for translating the Bible into Italian, about whose similarly imprisoned husband, Francesco Madiai, Walter Savage Landor wrote his final 'Imaginary Conversation'. F48/ 828/ GIOVAN PIETRO VIEUSSEUX/SVIZZERA
Pastor Luigi Santini wrote: 'Of all the celebrities whose memories are preserved in this cemetery, he is certainly the one to whom Florence and Italy owe the greatest debt. His grave, refurbished for the Centennial of his death, is to the right, near the entrance to the burial ground. Born into a family exiled from France for religious reasons, Vieusseux was a Genevan, but born in Oneglia where his family had a business. Intending to make a career in business himself, he travelled widely, gaining invaluable human and practical experience. Shortly after the Restoration he settled in Florence, and there contributed to the creation of a common body of thought which would provide a cultural heritage for the new Italy of the Risorgimento. The best minds from every region gravitated to his reviews and publications, and men of diverse temperament and education learned to respect one another and work together in the interest of what united them. Palazzo Buondelmonti, in Piazza Santa Trinita` was the setting for the Gabinetto di Letture, the Gabinetto Vieusseux, today in the Palazzo Strozzi, which attracted talent and became a window on the world, useful for weeding out provincialism from the country's best minds and promoting the national Risorgimento. Vieusseux did not participate in the Anglo-Florentine social whirl, but rather limited his friendships to his compatriots of the Evangelical Reformed Church and Italians seriously interested in learning and ideas. His life and activities have been widely publicized. If for no other reason than that Jean Pierre Vieusseux is buried here, this cemetery is a memorial to the passionate attachment and dedication to the cause of a united Italy which found its ideal focal point in Florence.' B8/ ELIZABETH BARRETT BROWNING, so passionately politically engaged with the Risorgimento, fretted about the hours Robert Browning spent in the Gabinetto Vieusseux, reading newspapers the Grand Duke of Tuscany otherwise had censored, because he told her women were not allowed membership, which was a blatant lie. Lady Blessington, Marian Wordsworth (F74), Feodor Dosteivsky, John Ruskin, Robert Browning, and countless others were readers there. [See Giuliana Artom Treves, Golden Ring , pp. 23-24.] Instead of family arms his tomb has the national Swiss white cross on a red ground, to be reversed after the Battle of Solferino in the Red Cross's international organization.

Like F129/ ROSA PULINI MADIAI, she is an Italian who turned Protestant, though, unlike the Madiai, she is of Florentine nobility, of the Guicciardini and the Pucci, widowed from the Morrochi whose palace is on the Via Cavour. Her brother Piero Giucciardini was arrested in 1851 and had to live in exile for his beliefs, founding the Italian branch of the Plymouth Brethren, returning to Italy in 1860. He left a fine library to the Biblioteca Nazionale They associated with the Protestant Walker family (C96/ CAPTAIN CHARLES MONTAGUE (HUDLESTON) WALKER, C97/ ANNA MARIA (RIDDELL) WALKER, both in Sector C, F14/ BIANCA [WALKER] BALDELLI, Sector F, etc.). F93/ CONSTANCE CECILIA (BULKELEY) DE BOURBEL/ ENGLAND
This young cosmopolitan is christened, 1806, in Lisbon, Portugal, then is married to Augustus Harold de Bourbel de Monpicon Marquis De Bourbel, playboy and fraudster, on 28 Mar 1828 in British Embassy Chapel, Paris, and at the Madeleine, and dies at 31 in Florence, the Times noting this is in childbirth, having been deserted by her husband in the last month of her pregnancy. Maquay attends her funeral. She has an elaborate tomb with her coat of arms. From the Web we learn that their daughter, who survived, Constance Georgina Louise de Bourbel de Monpicon Countess Wachtmeister (1838-1910), and even more of a Citizen of the World, was a close friend of Helena P. Blavatsky. She was born on March 28, 1838, in Florence, Italy. She lost her parents, the Marquis de Bourbel, formerly of the French diplomatic service, and Constance Bulkley, when she was very young and was sent to an aunt in England, where she lived, and in 1863 married a cousin, Count Karl Wachtmeister, then Swedish and Norwegian minister at the Court of St. James. After three years, they moved to Scandinavia, where her husband served as a government minister in Copenhagen and Stockholm. Wachtmeister was widowed in 1871. She had one son, Count Axel Raoul, a well-known musical composer in his day. Wachtmeister joined the Theosophical Society in 1881 and met H. P. Blavatsky in London in April 1884. She was secretary and treasurer of the Blavatsky Lodge in London and also worked for the Theosophical publishing company there, contributing generously to its funds. In 1887, Wachtmeister, the Keightleys, and Blavatsky acquired a large house at 17 Lansdowne Road, London, where Blavatsky continued to write The Secret Doctrine. In March 1888, the President, Henry S. Olcott, who had just finished a strenuous Indian tour, decided to leave Adyar, the Theosophical headquarters near Madras (now Chennai), India, and recuperate at Ootacamund. He held a meeting of the Executive Council, which appointed Wachtmeister as an additional secretary to the Western Section of the TS. In 1891, Olcott formed a League of Theosophical Workers, of which Wachtmeister became the first president; later that year, after the death of Blavatsky, Wachtmeister traveled to Adyar, where Olcott appointed her as president of the Women' s Education League, which worked to further the education of Indian women. Olcott had kept a diary covering the years since his first meeting with Blavatsky in America (1874). In 1893 he asked Wachtmeister to arrange for its publication. She wanted Olcott to delete passages that she considered derogatory to Blavatsky. Olcott did not agree, so he had the diary published as Old Diary Leaves (London: Putnam, 1895). Late that year, Wachtmeister, Besant, and Bertrand Keightley rented a property on four acres of land at Benares (now Varanasi), which eventually became the headquarters of the Indian Section. In February 1895, Olcott learned that William Q. Judge was considering secession from the Society; he left immediately for Calcutta to consult with Wachtmeister and Annie Besant regarding the best course of action. At the 1896 Adyar convention, Olcott paid glowing tribute to Wachtmeister in his presidential address, saying that she, "after performing prodigies of platform, social, and private work in Australasia, is now devoting herself enthusiastically to the helping of the American loyalists to reconstitute their Section." Annie Besant went to America in March 1897 to help rebuild the Section, which had been devastated by the Judge secession. She was met in New York by Wachtmeister, who travelled with her on a long tour that included lectures in seventy cities. After a considerable period in America, in 1899 Wachtmeister did an extensive lecture tour of France and India, resulting in the formation of many new lodges. Wachtmeister published an important account of her early association with Blavatsky as Reminiscences of H. P. Blavatsky and "The Secret Doctrine" (1893). She died, September 23, 1910.

This Irish participant in the Battle of Waterloo had a daughter who had married a German prince in Florence in 1834: Prince Henry LXLIV of Reuss-Schleiz-Joestritz married Matilda Henrietta Elizabeth born 12 May 1804, daughter of Lieutenant General John Locke and granddaughter of William, Viscount Courtenay, of Devon. It is likely she who raises this large monument with its shamrocks and armorial bearings, its 'Pelican in its Piety'. The iconography of the 'Pelican in its Piety' also appears on the tombs of CECILIA YLVERTON, IRELAND, B13I/ B9/ 959/ FANNY WAUGH HUNT/ ENGLAND, sculpted by the Pre-Raphaelite William Holman Hunt, and of D23R/ D121/ 422/ GAUDENZIO WITAL/ SVIZZERA, and JAMES LORIMER GRAHAM, AMERICA.

See http://www.florin.ms/waterloo.htmlSome coats of arms are for the heirs male of families while others are for cities, such as Florence, here with the cross and the lily, sculpted by Arnolfo di Cambio from the pietra forte quarried from what are now the Boboli Gardens, and placed on the former Porta Fiesolana, or city gate leading to Fiesole, amd that of the Bear for Bern on the tomb of the Swiss Samuel Guerner, while others are for nations, such as Switzerland's cross on Giampietro Vieusseux' tomb. But ideally there should be no frontiers, no racist nationalism, instead those with wealth and nobility maintaining the highest ethical standards and sharing power, learning, beauty, with all in peace and prosperity. In Canon Law, in baptism and in marriage we are equal and equally in debt to the other, overiding all hierarchies in State and Church. Florence's Republic, her Primo Popolo, was conducted in the love of God and neighbour, her podestò caring for the widows and orphans, pilgrims and merchants, mending roads and restoring bridges, provisioning hospitals, administering justice. These emblems of the Republic of Florence from the thirteenth century are to be found on our cemetery's back wall, amidst stones that were once in the towers of pride of the Ghibellines, then in the walls of common defence of the Guelfs, before Giuseppe Poggi tore them down and designed this oval island. Here in Florence's Swiss-owned so-called 'English' Cemetery one can 'find sermons in stones, books [in our library rather than in] running brooks, and good in everything'.
