"High prices in recent years have discouraged the growth of museum collections through purchases, but sophisticated private collectors continue to amass important holdings in such areas as Americana (Selch collection, New York), strings and bows (Kaston and Schambach collection, New York), pianos (Frederick collection, Ashburnham, Massachusetts), and rare European instruments (Rosenbaum collection, Scarsdale, New York). In making private collections accessible through catalogues and loans for display and performance, such owners supplement the educational role of museums..."

Note: Of the private collections cited above, the Kaston and Schambach, and Rosenbaum collections have been sold to collectors in Japan, and are no longer in this country.
