AARHUS, Denmark – Former Illinois State men's basketball guard DeVaughn Akoon-Purcell scored a game-high 25 points to lead the Bakken Bears to the Basketligaen – Danish Basketball League – championship by beating Horsens IC, 81-73, Monday night.
Bakken won the championship series, 4-1, to clinch a spot in the 2017-18 Basketball Champions League. Akoon-Purcell, who also collected eight rebounds and four assists Monday night, was named Finals MVP. Additionally, Akoon-Purcell – as a rookie – garnered Basketligaen Player of the Year accolades after averaging 22.2 points, 5.4 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.8 steals per game for the Bears in 2016-17.
Akoon-Purcell graduated from Illinois State in 2016 after averaging 13.5 points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game throughout his two seasons as a Redbird (2014-16).
