The third series of Jennifer Saunders' bucolic comedy Jam & Jerusalem returned to BBC1 with more than 4 million viewers last night, Sunday 9 August.
Jam & Jerusalem, previously broadcast on Friday nights, began a new three-part series starring Sue Johnston and Dawn French alongside Saunders, with 4.2 million viewers in the half hour from 8pm, an audience share of 20%.
The BBC1 programme that preceded it, Countryfile, was more popular, with 4.7 million viewers and a 26% share, at 7pm, according to unofficial overnights.
BBC1 also had the most popular programme of the night, with 9pm documentary Rivers with Griff Rhys Jones attracting 4.9 million, a 22% share.
Up against this, the bought-in Irish police drama Single-Handed continued on ITV1, with 3.5 million viewers, a 17% share between 9pm and 11pm.
A repeat of Poirot on ITV1 attracted 3 million people, a 15% share, over two hours from 7pm.
On BBC2, Louis Theroux ventured to Fresno, California, for his documentary The City Addicted to Crystal Meth, drawing an audience of 2.7 million people, a 12% share, at 9pm.
At 10pm on BBC2 the terrestrial premiere of the Steven Spielberg film Munich was seen by 1 million viewers, an 8% share.
On Channel 4, Alan Carr: Chatty Man, was watched by 1.7 million people at 10pm, a 9% audience share. A further 208,000 watched on Channel 4+1.
On Channel Five, the Steven Seagal film Flight of Fury was the network's most popular programme all day, with 1.4 million viewers, a 7% share.
A BBC1 documentary on the late Harry Patch, the last surviving soldier to have fought in the first world war trenches, had 2.3 million viewers, a 15% share, at 6pm.
