“Strawberry Point”

Welcome to remote and friendly Gustavus Alaska! A place where you can stand in one spot, look in all directions and see that we are surrounded with breathtaking mountains, pristine inland waters, glorious sandy beaches…and friendly characters who wave at everybody they meet! Wild strawberry fields offer the tiniest, sweetest morsels known to man. When ripe they are yours for the picking—but only if you get there first (the bears and just about everybody else loves them, too!) This has been true since the first wide-eyed settlers arrived on the shores of Salmon River in June of 1914 determined to homestead the lands. You, too, may arrive a total stranger here at Strawberry Point, and we hope to learn your story and to remember your name. It’s our wish that when you leave this unspoiled, magical place you will leave with renewed hope in mankind, and exhilarated that such a one-of-a-kind place still exists on this earth.

Gustavus, the Gateway Community to Glacier Bay National Park, offers the ideal visitor experience of a town steeped in a rich homesteader history, with wildlife sightings, worldclass fishing, and wildlife adventures along with moments of solitude and well-being. This friendly little town feels like a step into the past and boasts many writers and artists, gardeners and wilderness adventurers.

As a temperate rainforest with half the rainfall of Juneau, the climate is ideal for long walks and hikes, bike riding, kayaking, birdwatching and gardening. Although, walking and biking opportunities are abundant, there are also ground transportation options for sightseeing, for those who may not wish to walk or bike. This is a perfect habitat for seeking sightings of moose, bears, wolves and a multitude of birdlife.

Local coffeeshops, cafes and restaurants provide many taste treats, often using local produce and seafood. Gustavus is not a bustling place where the independent traveler and families get swept up in crowds, lines and hardsell impersonal treatment.

Lodging options cater to personal tastes and range from full service lodges, quality B&B’s, guesthouses and rustic cabins and a campground. Prices range from low, mid-range to high for various travelers choice and preferences.
