About the Trust | The Sir Richard Hadlee Sports Trust Grants and the Canterbury Sportsperson of the Year (original) (raw)

The Trust (1990-2019)

The Sir Richard Hadlee Sports Trust was a non-profit charitable trust established by Sir Richard Hadlee in August 1990, immediately after his retirement from a professional cricketing career. The trust ceased to operate in 2019 after almost 30 years of operation.

The primary focus of the Sir Richard Hadlee Sports Trust was to ensure that young Cantabrians were given the opportunity to fulfil their cultural and sporting goals. From 1990-2019 the trust made hundreds of financial grants to assist young Cantabrians where hardship prevented them from accomplishing their cultural or sporting endeavours.

Like many charitable organisations, the Trust was reliant on ongoing financial assistance to make grants available. The trust oversaw and ran numerous fundraising events including Charity Golf Days and The Canterbury Sportsperson of the Year Awards Dinner from 1991-2011. The Canterbury Sportsperson of the Year Awards recognised Canterbury's greatest sporting talents as well as the important role of the sporting officials and administrators. The previous winners of The Canterbury Sportsperson of the Year Awards and The Marriotts Hadlee Sports Awards can be viewed from 1991 up to 2016.

The Trust was administered by Sir Richard Hadlee (Patron), Trust Chairman John Campbell, and Trustees - Pamela Lindsay, Karen Hadlee, and Nicholas Hadlee as well as former trustees John Wendelken, Lesley Murdoch, Susan Teague and Grant Brown.

The final grant of The Sir Richard Hadlee Sports Trust was a charitable donation to The Canterbury Cricket Trust to assist the development of The Sir Richard Hadlee Sports Centre serving as a permanent legacy of the trust. This new purpose-built indoor sports facility will benefit the growth of mens and womens cricket of all ages in Canterbury.
