The Viking Great Army in Northern Britain
Date & Time: 24 June, 6.30pm
Speaker: Dr Tom Horne
In this fascinating talk, historian Tom Horne explores new evidence for the Viking Great Army’s presence in northern Britain
Traditionally associated with campaigns recorded in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle in England, the army’s activity north of the River Tyne has long been overlooked.

From newly excavated sites to intriguing artefacts such as bullion weights and hacksilver, the talk sheds new light on how the Great Army operated across northern Britain.

Picts and Vikings, Northern Scotland AD 800-1000
Date & Time: 8 July, 6.30pm
Speaker: Professor David Griffiths
Professor David Griffiths explores the complex relationship between the Picts and incoming Scandinavians in the centuries around AD 800–1000
Drawing on the latest archaeological research from Orkney, Shetland and mainland Scotland, Professor Griffiths challenges the long-held belief that the Northern Isles were immediately transformed by Viking settlement. Instead, the evidence suggests a more gradual and subtle process of cultural change, shaped by local communities and wider connections across the Irish Sea world.

Overlord: The Life and Reign of Henry VIII
Date & Time: 11 August, 6.30pm
Speaker: Steven Veerapen
Henry VIII is one of history’s most recognisable monarchs — remembered as the larger-than-life king with six wives and a reputation for tyranny and excess. But how accurate is that image?
In this expert history webinar, historian Steven Veerapen explores the real story behind Henry VIII. Drawing on archival sources from across the British Isles, he reveals a very different perspective on the Tudor ruler, one who saw himself not merely as King of England, but as the overlord of a wider British dominion spanning Scotland, Ireland, Wales and beyond.
Join us to discover the complex, ambitious and often theatrical figure behind the legend — and the imperial dream that drove one of Britain’s most famous kings.
