HKBA | Hong Kong Bar Association (original) (raw)

It is my honour to serve as the Chairman of the Hong Kong Bar Association. The Bar, in accordance with its objects, plays a vital role in the administration of justice in Hong Kong, including the championing of judicial independence, the Rule of Law and the Basic Law.

Upholding the honour and independence of the Bar is the foundation of our endeavours. It is in the public interest to maintain a strong and independent Bar which is respected at home and abroad. We are committed to supporting our 1,700 members, especially our next generation, to excel. As the approved regulator for all barristers, we will continue to prescribe and maintain the highest standards of professional conduct, discipline and etiquette.

Our objects encompass all matters affecting the profession and the administration of justice in Hong Kong. We will continue to contribute to legal reform, encourage legal education, and foster good relations and understanding between the two branches of Hong Kong’s legal professions, as well as between the Bar, the Judiciary, Law Officers of the Department of Justice and the public. Additionally, we support access to justice through legal aid and pro bono work, ensuring that prompt and efficient legal representation is available for all.

We also aim to promote Hong Kong’s justice system and status as a centre for international dispute resolution, to strengthen the relations between the Bar and lawyers outside Hong Kong, and to provide common law education in the rest of the country.

The Bar will carry on its customary role in educating the public on legal issues, defending the rule of law and maintaining judicial independence. At the same time, we will raise awareness of the Bar’s significant contributions to our society, emphasising the value of independent and specialist advocacy.
