FEATURED CITY
Niterói, Brazil
ICLEI Member since 2017, Niterói has been proactive in advancing sustainability initiatives, with Mayor Axel Grael co-chairing ICLEI’s Climate Action Support Portfolio. The city has implemented several sustainability programs, such as “Niterói on Bicycle” to promote cycling as a sustainable mode of transportation, and “Carbon Neutralization Program” to offset carbon emissions through various environmental projects. Additionally, Niterói has developed a Smart, Human, and Sustainable City Plan to guide its digital transformation in alignment with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. Participating actively in forums like the UN Conference of the Parties (COPs) and Daring Cities, Niterói is proving its commitment to creating a more sustainable and resilient urban environment.

Mohamed Sefiani, Mayor of Chefchaouen, Morocco | ICLEI Vice President
Mayor Mohamed Sefiani has led Chefchaouen since 2009, driving sustainable development and cultural heritage preservation. Under Mayor Mohamed Sefiani’s leadership, Chefchaouen has transformed into an ecological city, implementing initiatives in renewable energy, energy efficiency, and sustainable tourism. In 2010, the city committed to becoming an “Ecological City,” earning recognition like the 2018 Climate Initiatives Trophy for its climate action efforts.
An engineer by training, he is a prominent advocate for urban sustainability, serving as ICLEI Vice President, the President of the Mediterranean Old Cities Network, the UCLG Intermediary Cities Working Group, and the African Cities Network for Culture and Heritage. He also holds key roles as Secretary General of the Federation of Moroccan and Andalusian Cities and as a Board Member of the Global Covenant of Mayors (GCoM).
