'Fruits Basket' Tops Bookstore Sales (original) (raw)

Like Full Metal Alchemist Vol. 1, Fruits Basket Vol. 9 has now spent four consecutive weeks atop the BookScan list of graphic novels sold in bookstores, barely nosing out another Tokyopop title, D.N.Angel Vol. 8, for the top spot for the week ending June 19th. Dark Horse/Digital Manga's Vampire Hunter D moved up to #4 in its second week in the top ten and Viz had six of the first ten titles, led by Rurouni Kenshin Vol. 15 at #3, followed by Full Metal Alchemist Vol. 1 at #5, Bleach Vol. 7 at #6, YuYu Hakusho Vol. 7 at #7, Dragon Ball Z Vol. 20 at #8, and Hana Kimi Vol. 6 at #9.

Andy Riley's perennial bestseller, the Book of Bunny Suicides, first published back in 2003, took the tenth spot (and has sold almost 16,000 copies so far in 2005).

Several books made major moves up the chart including Tokyopop's Tokyo Mew Mew a la Mode Vol. 1, which went from #39 to #14 and ADV's Yotsubato! Vol. 1, which climbed from #31 to #15, and another ADV title, Chrono Crusade Vol. 5, which jumped from #214 to #17.

The effect of the well-reviewed Batman Begins film, which opened June 15th, can be seen in the progress of Frank Miller's Batman Year One from #72 to #18. Both volumes of Batman Hush by Jeph Loeb and Jim Lee moved into the top fifty at #29 & #26 respectively, along with Frank Miller's Batman The Dark Knight Returns at #37. The Batman Begins graphic novel adaptation debuted at #54.

Daniel Clowes' Ice Haven spent its second week in the top 50 (at #32) and Bill Morrison's Simpsons collection, the Homer Book, jumped from #98 to #39. Altogether there were 12 non-manga books in the top 50 including the Dark Horse adaptation of Star Wars Episode III, which remains the best-selling graphic novel of the year to date in bookstores .
