Our Approach

We Put Youth

First

Our focus on youth programs fosters change across age groups and entire communities.

American Indian-Led

Our leadership is committed to preserving the traditions, languages and sanctity of American Indian communities.

We Help Where Needed Most

Rather than coming into a community and announcing what we will do, we listen to what our partners tell us they need.

Billy Mills

Billy Mills, Oglala Lakota (Sioux) is Running Strong’s National Spokesperson. An Olympic gold medalist at the 1964 Olympics, Billy has dedicated his life to serving Native American communities.

##### Running Strong Changes Lives

"We were so grateful to Running Strong for the school supplies and backpacks. Our local programs are operating on limited budgets and were not able to help this year. Running Strong filled a void and helped families who would not have been able to get help."

Program Spotlight

Clean Water

When Running Strong for American Indian Youth® was formed in 1986, getting clean, safe drinking water to the residents of Pine Ridge was one of our top priorities. Previously, Running Strong satisfied this need by drilling water wells. However, the need for wells declined as the Oglala Sioux Rural Water Supply System was created and water lines were laid providing access to water. This past year through Diné NaabehóTó (the Navajo People’s Water Challenge), Running Strong connected 13 households to water in these communities, providing 92 individuals with access to clean, running water.

The Oyate Ta Kola Ku Community Center provides a safe and welcoming space for the children and youth of Pine Ridge. As a popular gathering place for many young students, we recognized the need for a dedicated learning area.

That’s why we're working to equip the center with 20 computers 💻, giving students a space to complete homework 📚, receive tutoring 🤝, and access the resources they need to support their academic success. 🧠

But we can't do it without you. Help us close the digital divide and ensure Native students on Pine Ridge have the technology they need to succeed! 💻📚

I have several older PCs which could be made useful again. I cannot afford to donate money but would gladly send these if you think you could use them.

In many Native communities, a lack of access to broadband and computers has created a significant academic gap, with only 19% of Native 4th and 8th graders proficient in reading 📚.

To help bridge this divide, we aim to provide 20 computers 💻 to the OTKK center, giving children the resources to learn, research, complete homework, and access the internet 🌐. They will also benefit from tutoring and the support of a caring community ❤️.

However, we can’t achieve this alone – we need your help 🤝. Your donation today secures a child's future 🌟.

It's an exciting day as we kick off our first food box distribution on Crow Nation. On this Friday the 13th, a day that's turning out to be lucky for the community, we're delivering 500 food boxes 📦. These will provide 250 families and elders 👵👨‍👧‍👦 facing food insecurity with the nutrition they need for the week 🥘.

With a poverty rate more than double that of Montana, many families on the Crow Indian Reservation struggle to make ends meet 💔. These food boxes will help fill that gap and ensure they have enough to eat throughout the week 🥗.

But the impact doesn't stop here! Last week, we provided food boxes to over 100 families on the Walker River Paiute Reservation in Nevada. Later this month, we’ll deliver 1,000 more to the Cheyenne River Reservation and hundreds to Pine Ridge.

As food insecurity grows, we’re doubling our efforts to distribute nearly 2,000 boxes monthly 📦—and we need your support to make it happen ❤️.
